David MacIntosh Obituary

David Blanding MacIntosh QUINCY David Blanding Bonnie, a prominent life-long resident of Quincy, passed away February 12, 2009 at his home. He was 95 years old, and the beloved husband of 57 years to the late Helen T. (Batson) who died August 1, 1998. Born in Quincy on January 8, 1914, he was the only child born to the late Honorable David S. McIntosh, former Mayor of Quincy, and the late Ella (Blanding). He graduated Quincy High School in 1932, Thayer Academy 1933, and from Harvard University in 1937 with a BS in Government, and a minor in economics. While at Harvard, David played on the Varsity Baseball Team, and is a member of the Harvard Varsity Club, and served as a member and former Chairman of the Harvard Club of Quincy. After college, he continued to play semi-pro baseball on a number of teams in the South Shore area before settling into his role as Coach and Manager for various youth leagues in and around Quincy. A dedicated life long fan of all New England pro sports teams, he especially loved the Boston Red Sox, and possessed a near encyclopedic knowledge of the game of baseball, recalling at will even the most obscure statistics. Mr. MacIntosh was employed by the former Hood Rubber Co. of Watertown before working at both the East Boston Shipyard and the Fore River Shipyard as a Foreman. He retired in 1980 from Armstrong World Industries, where he had worked for many years as a Purchasing Manager. His work also included serving as Chairman of the Board of Directors for 23 years at the former South Shore Co-Operative Bank, now known as S Bank, and serving on the Board of Managers at the Former Quincy City Hospital, now Quincy Medical Center, where he was Chairman for many years. His other interests include a long and active participation in Freemasonry, and he was a longtime member of Rural Lodge, A.F. & A.M. He was also active in politics, and was a registered Republican. Bonnie and his beloved wife enjoyed traveling the world during their time together after retirement, and were happiest when spending time together with their loving family. Devoted father of David B. MacIntosh, Jr. and his wife, Jane G. of W. Yarmouth, Robert B. MacIntosh and his wife, Linda M. of Winchester, and Nancy MacIntosh Paul and her husband, Richard of Holden. Bob and family! My thoughts and prayers are with you. Your Dad coached us many years ago on Granite City Electric. As a coach and father , you always remember those attributes of those who coached and taught us along the way. It is with fondness that I remember your dad as, yes a coach but more importantly, a gentlemen! My best to you and your families.

Best wishes for a day of fond memories to the MacIntosh family. My dad attended Harvard with Mr. MacIntosh. Many years later, his son Bob and I met in graduate school. A few years ago, we enjoyed what was probably their last game at Fenway with three fine gentlemen: David MacIntosh, Ed Ingalls, and Bill Lee. When the crowd rose, they'd begin getting out of their seats. By the time they were up, everyone else was on the way down. But they made it. They were gamers. And they enjoyed seeing each other, which was a treat for their three sons there with them. When my dad passed away a few years ago, I was so impressed that Bob MacIntosh and Eddie Ingalls made their way to the Harvard Club for the reception. Where did they get that sense of class, that respect for their fathers' old ties? You guessed it: their dads. May we all continue to meet that standard.
Fondly,
Richard Lee
