Lucian Brown Obituary

Lucian Gilbert Brown passed away July 16, 2021. Lou was born Oct. 28, 1932, in Winchester, Mass. He was the only child of Lucian Gilbert Brown, at whose funeral he was christened, and the former Mary Adelaide Ward. Orphaned at thirteen, Lou developed a lifelong gratitude to the YMCA for helping him find an outlet in athletics. He graduated in 1951 from Quincy High School, where he played football, ran track, and served as a class officer. There he met classmate Helen Louise Hughes, with whom he would remain together for seventy years after their senior prom. Lou attended Bates College and played football there for two years and served two years in the U.S. Army before he began a career of forty-two years at IBM. He later graduated from Northeastern University in 1964. Lou and Helen married in 1956 and remained in the Quincy area until they moved in 1967 to Springfield, Va. They lived there and in Annandale for forty-three years except for two separate years in Westchester County, New York. Lou was long an active member of Holy Spirit Church and later Saint Ambrose Church. After his retirement from IBM he continued to work part-time with the company but was able to focus on his passion for athletics and become a swimming instructor. He won dozens of medals in road races, triathlons, and swim meets, and he taught hundreds of children to swim. Lou and Helen moved to Leesburg, Va., in 2010 and have been devout members of St. John the Apostle Roman Catholic Church. Lou and Helen had seven children, one of whom died in childbirth. Lou is survived by his wife and their other six children, Mary Elizabeth, BJ, Thomas (Carol Harrison), Chris (John Borgman), Gerard (Carmina Ocampo-Brown), and Marjorie (Peter Kuzminski). He was predeceased by two grandchildren, Patrick Christopher Devlin and Lucian Arthur Brown, and survived by ten grandchildren, Brendan Devlin, Clare Devlin, Mary Devlin, Veronica Brown, Stephen Borgman, Lauren Borgman, Gabriel Brown, Andres Lucian Brown, Sophia Kuzminski, and Evelyn Kuzminski. Lou was a loving and generous husband, father, and grandfather, and a radiant presence to everyone he met. In the accent of his native region he emphasized that each day was "supah", or super, and his joyous gratitude for life will continue to inspire the family and friends who mourn his death.

I remember how dad (Charles Brown) idolized his big brother (Lou's father) Lucian. And that Lucian (the elder) played baseball in the monor leagues. Looks like that branch of the family was exceedingly athletic. And good at it !

I had a typo in my previous message. "I am a 1st Cousin to Lucian and his Uncle (Fred Sr) was my Dad. Lucian Sr & Fred Sr were Brothers".

I am a 1st Cousin to Lucian and his Brother (Fred Sr) was my Dad. I will always remember Lucian in Boston playing on the Bates football team. Our Grandmother Brown (Nanna) took me to see Lucian & the Game. I was probably maybe 7 years old? Lucian was busy with the team, but was able to come over to the sidelines and say "hello" to both of us. Attached is a picture of Lester G Brown (Pop) & Sarah Brown (Nanna) our Grandparents, and it looks like the 3 boys in the front, Lucian, Fred, & Charlie.

Hi. This is Sandy, daughter of Charlie Brown, Lucian's uncle. My cousin Fred Brown alerted us siblings to Lucian's obituary. I met Gerard for lunch one day near his work (before covid). I'm so glad to read of all Lucian's activities and accomplishments. What an impressive guy! He was about 16 years older than me. I'm rembering him in our yard in Harvard Mass. when he might have been about 28.

I just found Lou's obituary since us Brown cousins had just received an email with a picture of the Brown Family grave site in Harvard Massachusetts. I had met Lou in my early years at the Farm in Harvard, and also watched a Bates football game in Boston where he was playing. Probably around 1952. He came over to the sideline during a timeout and said "Hi Nana and Cousin Freddie, how are you doing"? I also stayed at his Virginia home with He and Helen around 1967 when I was enroute to Florida for a trip. Lou was someone I remembered over and over even if we did not see each other often. And my Parents and Grandparents thought the world of Lucian and his Father, (Lucian SR), who passed at 33 years old.

Mr. Brown,
Sir, I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for our Country when you served with the U.S. Army during the Cold War. Millions of Americans slept safe at night because you and your fellow Servicemen stood ready to defend our Country. And to your Family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.

Many fond memories of Uncle Lou's quick smile, kind words and generosity in his heart.
There are no words that can fill the void Aunt Helen and the gang, but the memory of Uncle Lou's smile will always endure.
