C.J. Harris Obituary
CHESNEE, SC-- Clellan John ('CJ') Harris Sr., 93, husband of Nancy Kelly Harris for the past 72 years, died Wednesday, November 6, 2013.
Mr. Harris was born November 12, 1919 in the Cherokee Creek community of Cherokee County, the son of the late Raleigh Harris and Laura Hammett Harris. He was a Combat Battery Army Staff Sergeant serving our country during WWII. After the war, he and a relative founded Godfrey & Harris Furniture in 1946 which later became CJ Harris Furniture in 1964. Mr. Harris was a long time member of Chesnee First Baptist Church and served in various capacities over the years.
His concern for the betterment of his community led to his election to the Spartanburg County District 2 school board. When a Spartanburg County Commission was founded for the establishment of a technical college, Mr. Harris served on the initial board and future appointed terms. 'CJ' was an avid gardener and enjoyed golf, fishing and "his" Atlanta Braves. Raising funds to support Chesnee High School's various athletic programs was dear to his heart. His love for his family, friends, and many loyal customers at his business was very obvious throughout his lifetime.
Surviving are sons, Kelly Harris and wife Lamonda of Chesnee, Dennis Harris of Chesnee, Brett Harris and wife Christa of Charlotte, NC; daughter, Michelle Hall and husband Ron of Spartanburg, five grandchildren, John Harris (Jeanna), Garner Guynn, Maria Trent, Jessica Rowland (Jay), and Kelly Angle, six great-grandchildren, Abby, Shelby and Miley Harris, Taylor and Cooper Trent, and Caydenn Rowland.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a daughter, Betsy Harris Angle, a brother Kent Harris, and three sisters Madelyn, Marilyn and Sue.
The family will receive friends from 4:00-6:00 PM on Saturday, November 9, 2013 at Eggers Funeral Home in Chesnee, SC. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, November 10, 2013 at Chesnee First Baptist Church with Dr. Gary Grogan officiating. Interment will follow at Cherokee Creek Baptist Church cemetery.

Our condolences to the Harris family. Over the years Mr. Harris has been an inspiration to us. We were his furniture customers and it was always a pleasure to be around him and listen to his good stories. He introduced us to 8-way hand tie. He was a wonderful man and friend that will be missed.
