WEST COLUMBIA, SC-- George Cameron Todd, 87, died on Sunday, April 14, 2013, in Columbia, SC, with his wife of 62 years Elizabeth (Betty) Clarke Todd at his side.
Born in Columbia, on January 8, 1926, he was the son of the late Benjamin Harris and Mary Cameron Cole Todd. He graduated from Dreher High School and received a degree in Business from The University of South Carolina in 1950. He served in the United States Navy during World War II.
He was an original partner of Merrill, Lynch, Pierce, Fenner and Smith and worked as the Managing partner for the firm in the State of South Carolina for 42 years. A lifelong resident of Columbia he was devoted to his church and community in numerous capacities.
He served Trinity Episcopal Cathedral (including as Senior Warden), The Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce (including as President), The United Way of the Midlands (including as Campaign Chairman), The Central Carolina Community Foundation, (including as a founding member and the First Board Chairman), The Columbia Zoological Society, The Palmetto Society, The Providence Hospital (including as Trustee), The University of South Carolina Educational Foundation (including as President and President Emeritus), USC School of Medicine Board of Advisor and in numerous other leadership and advisory capacities in the Greater Columbia area and throughout the State.
He was the recipient of the Algernon Sydney Sullivan award from The University of South Carolina and the Humanitarian of the Year award from The Palmetto Society.
Surviving are his wife, his children, Elizabeth Todd Heckel and her husband Dr. Robert Vero Heckel of Columbia, George Cameron Todd, Jr. and his wife Sarah Hall Todd of Spartanburg, Albert Rhett Heyward Todd of Santa Barbara, CA and Cantey Todd Foxworth and her husband Eugene (Foxy) Dewey Foxworth III of Mount Pleasant; and his grandsons, George Cameron Todd III, Eugene Hall Todd, Eugene Dewey Foxworth IV, Burwell Boykin Clarke Todd and Albert Rhett Heyward Todd, Jr.; and his granddaughter, Heyward Boykin Foxworth. He was pre-deceased by a brother, Benjamin Harris Todd, Jr.; and a sister, Margaret Tuttle Todd.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening, April 17th from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. at The Guignard Mansion at Still Hopes Retirement Community.
Services will be held Thursday, April 19 at 11a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral officiated by The Reverend Canon Charles M. Davis, Jr. Inurnment will be in the Church Columbarium. A reception will follow in Satterlee Hall.
