I will miss Julian . He hired me for his Radiology group in 1982. He was a great mentor , personality , and driving force with Dr Bearden for the cancer center . Like Dr. John Fleming, he was a great raconteur and could tell you such detail as whose 5 th cousin married so and so!
Diana and I join in our condolences to Dorothy and their family.

I appreciate being allowed to play Dr. Joseys Steinway piano in the Gibbs Center. So often Dr. Josey would come and sit at piano and listen even with requests. I will continue to play to his memory. You are missed. Barbara Kolk [email protected]

Dr, Josey was a very kind man, and I am sad that I didn’t know him better. I had only met him briefly. I have known his wife Dorothy for many years. Dr. Josey has helped so many people from Spartanburg and surrounding towns. This world was blessed to have Dr. Josey benefiting his friends and neighbors. I am so sorry, and I send my condolences to the entire family in this time.

Dearest Dorothy,
I was so sorry to hear about Julian. Please know I've been thinking and praying for you and your daughters as y'all adjust to life without your sweet, loving, brilliant Julian. You were a wonderful wife to him and I'm thankful y'all had so many happy years together. I'll be thinking of you tomorrow as you and Spartanburg celebrate his life and all he gave and meant to his family and community.
Love,
Patti

Dear Dorothy and Family,
Dr. Josey was a dear friend to Roberta and myself. With his vision and passion, we developed plans for the Cancer Center and its future. We took many trips nationwide to obtain ideas to design a first class center. He wanted to make sure the Center was a comfort to patients from the art work, plants and waterfalls. He was a remarkable person, and his mark will always be imprinted in the community he loved dearly.

33 years together! Dorothy, I imagine there will be a huge hole in your heart, but I know that you will shower your friends and family with love and they will in return. Julian made a huge difference in our lives. Increase that change ten or a hundred times to get an idea of the change that we saw Dorothy make in Julian's life. Our life changed in 1973 when Julian brought us to Spartanburg and The General Hospital. This was not just a change to a beautiful place with inviting and interesting people but a definite change in culture. This included the art behind and around story telling. Thank you Julian for arms full of stories that we carry and drop along the way. We will miss you.

My condolences and prayers to the entire family. Dr. Josey and I spent many minutes sharing our experiences with the same disease . Although he never treated me but was always available to have an open conversation about his thoughts and expertise on how to cope with how it was affecting us. Most of our talks were in a social setting at SRHC or a Foundation event. I was a member of the Board a few years ago and will miss our brief talks/conversations. He gave me a lot of inspiration as I continue to cope with our shared disease.

I met Dr Julian Josey during my 3-month MUSC OB/Gyn residency rotation at Spartanburg General Hospital when in July 1978. Since then I have never encountered anyone more dedicated and hell bent on fighting for world class health care. And he was determined to fight for not only his patients and his family - but fight equally for every member of the human race. Now that, ladies and gentlemen, is THE supreme compliment in our world of the practice of medicine. And it is a compliment which fit to perfection.
I am so proud of my friend Julian, and I celebrate his life and boundless influence.

Who else would require his lake house guests to listen to a couple of hours of bluegrass music on NPR on a Saturday night and then reward them with a peach cobbler prepared and served at about the midnight hour? This is the memory I would like to share with Dorothy who threw him a life ring at the perfect time as he did to her! Best to all who loved this unique friend! Robert French
