BLACK HAWK, S.D. - Frank C. Whitney, 72, of Black Hawk, S.D., died Wednesday, April 6, 2005, at Ft. Meade VA Medical Center in Sturgis, S.D.
Memorial Services were Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church in Piedmont, S.D., with the Rev. Dan Freed officiating. Osheim-Catron Funeral Home Rapid City, S.D. Military honors were by the Piedmont American Legion Post 311. Burial will be at the end of May at Pond Cemetery, Lakeville, Mass.
Mr. Whitney was born Nov. 18, 1932 in Middleborough, Mass., to Charles and Myrtle (Elliott) Whitney.
He joined the U.S. Navy in 1955 and became a fighter pilot flying off of aircraft carriers. He served 5 years active duty, then he joined the Naval Reserve for 15 years.
He married Shirley Stivers Nov. 21, 1962 in Middleborough.
He attended Brown University in Providence, R.I., receiving a bachelor of science degree in aeronautical engineering, and he received a master's degree in business administration from Northeastern University in Boston. After coming off active duty, Frank worked as an electrical engineer for various electrical power agencies in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Michigan, and Nebraska before becoming the director of engineering for Southern Minnesota Municipal Power Agency, Rochester, Minn. in 1983. He retired in 1997 and moved to Black Hawk.
He was a member of the Society for the Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America in Columbus. He later joined the chapter in Rochester, and after moving to Black Hawk, he became active in the Shrine of Democracy Barbershop Chorus in Rapid City.
Frank was a member of the church and Piedmont American Legion Post 311.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Barry C. (Teresa) Whitney of Rapid City; two daughters, Lisa (Eric) Smith of Decatur, Ark., and Ruth (Eric) Ramanauskas of Woodbridge, Va.; two brothers, Elliott (Barbara) Whitney of Tiverton, R.I.; and C. Mansfield (Jackie) Whitney of Barefoot Bay, Fla.; and eight grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by a sister Edna Whitney.
Memorials have been established to Grace United Methodist Church, the Shrine of Democracy Barbershop Chorus and The Leukemia And Lymphoma Society.
