We are very sorry to hear of Marthas death. You won't know us because we grew up with Martha in Lilesville. She was so much fun and we ejoyed so many days with all her family. She, Betty, Jeff and Pete were such kind and friendly people. We miss them all.
We were younger than Martha, we are now just shy of 80 years old, but we will always enjoy our times with them.

She was my neighbor in Converse Heights for years and always so kind. A woman of deep knowledge and substance, I remember well how she took care of her son in 1996 with all the devotion one could ever wish for in the love of a Mother. I know, Jamie told me how he felt about his Mom. So was so large in her shoes she owned any room she walked into. And it shall so remain in her afterlife I do expect. Much sympathy to a great family.

I was sorry to learn of the loss of your family member. I appreciate her generosity in contributing to the Chapman Cultural Center. I saw her last at the dedication of Marshall's name to the Music Trail.

Susan and I share in your sorrow. Martha was one of a kind! Jim Edwards might never have been governor without her. She did her thing, dared anyone to challenge her and took no guff off of anyone (I'm trying to keep this clean). What an elegant and talented lady whom I always enjoyed seeing in the years since and admired tremendously. As a co-chairman of the Inaugural Committee in 1975, she had us all in stitches at every meeting but efficiently and charmingly led us to a successful conclusion. It was a privilege to know and work with her on the campaign and the Inaugural festivities and to intern along with Mary with Senator Thurmond in 1968. (Are we really that old?) What a great lady and a wonderful example for her progeny! As many of us have already learned, sooner or later you have to give them up. May God fill the world with Martha Chapmans!

Dorothy, Marshall and Mary,
I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your dear mother. I got to know her when I was a neighbor of Jamie's in Atlanta and enjoyed her visits. I've sort of kept up with her through Gretchen, a friend here in Cht. I'll always remember Jamie fondly and loved our years of friendship. His memory lives on and your mom's will too!
