Geraline Varner Obituary

GRANDVIEW - Geraline J. "Gerry" Varner, 84, of Grandview died Monday, Sept. 16, 2013, at her home in Grandview.
She was born Aug. 30, 1929, at Somerset, Ky., a daughter of the late George C. and Grace Randolph Jessee.
She was preceded in death by siblings Margaret Crook, George C. Jessee Jr. and Katherine Nicholson.
Gerry was an active member of Cornerstone United Methodist Church for the past 10 years, where she served on the administrative board as secretary. Gerry was also active in the United Methodist Women, the Homeless Shelter ministry and the Prayer Shawl ministry.
Prior to Cornerstone, she was a member of Tell City United Methodist Church, where she taught junior-and senior-high Sunday school and vacation Bible school, served on most church committees and was chairwoman of the pastor parish committee for many years. Gerry was also a lay speaker. Gerry attended the Walk to Emmaus in Owensboro in 1990 and served on formation teams at various times for the three Emmaus teams of Owensboro, southwestern Indiana and Evansville districts.
Over the years, short-term missionary work had taken Gerry and her husband to South Carolina, North Carolina, Mississippi, Alabama, Illinois, Kentucky and Oklahoma. She also worked foreign fields in Guatemala and Mexico and as a visitor to mission projects in South Africa.
Gerry was employed most of her life. The latest employer was Alcoa, where she was senior financial analyst in the cost accounting department. She retired in 1993.
Survivors include John Varner, her husband of 41 years; a son, Mark Satkamp and wife, Linda of Georgetown; her daughter, Beth Schue and husband, Jerry of Santa Claus; a son, Jeff Varner and wife Janie of Cannelton; six grandchildren, Madeline Satkamp, Samuel Satkamp, Lisa Schriefer and husband, Harold, Jennifer Varner and husband, Jerry, Jessica Varner and Jodi Griepenstroh; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a brother, Charles E. Jessee of Sandridge; a brother-in-law, Larry Nicholson of Yahala, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Mary Jessee of Newburgh and three nieces and three nephews.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, (today) at the Cornerstone United Methodist Church in Chrisney. The Rev. Mark Miller will officiate.
Burial will be in New Hope Cemetery in Newtonville.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of service Thursday at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to Spencer County Hospice Association, Cornerstone United Methodist Church memorial fund, Chrisney or the John and Gerry Varner Scholarship fund at either South Spencer High School in Reo or Heritage Hills High School in Lincoln City or a charity of choice.
Boultinghouse Funeral Home in Rockport was in charge of arrangements.
