My Neighbor Across The Street
My mom never could have imagined when we moved into our house in 1979 the blessing she would find in our neighbor across the street. It's ironic when I think of it, she would have been around the same age I am now when we moved in. I wonder if she knew the impact she would have on the 3 little girls moving in, or on my mom.
Betty, Betty Boop we liked to call her, was so many things to so many people. This is what Betty was to me....
There are people in this world that bring happiness and comfort to everyone, Betty was one of those people. Her smile and sparkling blue eyes could make everything better in an instant. I can remember when I was very little, mom would be working endlessly and when I needed something, all I had to do was pick up the phone and over she would come. My tummy hurt, Betty would be there. I was scared, Betty would come. My older sisters were being mean, Betty would come. I just needed a hug, you guessed it, Betty came. It never mattered the time, day or night, hot or cold, she would be there. I learned one of her hugs, a pat on the hand and her warm tea with milk and honey could make any trouble I had melt away. I believe I learned how to safely cross the street going to her house time and time again. She would walk out, stand on her side of the road and have me wait till the road was clear.
At her house there was always something sweet to eat. Birds in their cage in the corner of her kitchen. I would listen to her talk to them and just giggle. A grandfather clock in the living room I would always hope to hear. In the summertime we would go to the garden. I swear the older she got, the bigger her garden was. Rows and rows of so many things, and boy could she make them grow.
In the winter time, down to the basement we would go. Her Christmas tree trimmed in silver tinsel. I remember a Christmas display she had that when you lit the red candles the heat frome the candles would cause it to turn and come to life. She always knew I would want to see it and would happily bring it to life whenever I was there.
She was "the energizer bunny" always on the go, fleeting from one thing to the next. I remember at 13 grumbling about having to mow the lawn, weed the ditch or pick up pinecones, only to look across the street to see Betty squatting down weeding, mowing her lawn or picking up pinecones and think, "does that lady ever tire?"
She taught me Eskimo and butterfly kisses, oh how excited I'd be when she'd offer up one which was always followed up by the other. Our visits always ended with her saying, "I'll see you bye to bye" Oh how I wish everyone was as lucky as me to have Betty in ther life. I will love her forever and always keep her close. She never was just my neighbor across the street, she my Betty Boop and will miss her always.....
