Bruce Balter Obituary

Bruce Richard Balter, age 88, passed away after a brave battle with Parkinson's on September 23, 2025. He spent his final days surrounded by the love of family, coworkers and friends in hospice at Care Dimensions in Lincoln, Massachusetts. Bruce was born on September 2, 1937 in Boston and grew up in Newton, before raising his family in Weston.
He was the son of the late Archie E. Balter and the late Ethel Stromberg Balter of Newton. He was preceded in death by his older brother, Alan L. Balter, of Boston.
Bruce was the beloved husband of Marcy for 59 years. Together they made a great team, traveling the world together, serving on the Board of the Wellness Community, playing tennis at Wightman or in Florida at Mirasol, and taking care of their well-loved dogs over many years, including Cosby, Mandy and Brady. Bruce and Marcy also had a fondness for Vermont, where they initially owned a home on Stratton Mountain, where they could be found skiing with their family many weekends of the year; they ultimately built their own home in Londonderry, Vermont, where Bruce acted as a gentleman farmer for the better part of 15 years.
He was a wealth manager for over 60 years in Boston. Known for a deep expertise in municipal bonds, having started his career at White Weld & Co., which became Painwebber Inc; Bruce eventually moved to Morgan Stanley before settling at UBS for the last part of his career where he worked with passion and unlimited energy, still at nearly 3 days a week until his passing. A graduate of Newton High School (1955), Boston University (1959), and Boston College Law School (1962), he was initiated into the Tan Epsilon Phi fraternity in 1956, and received an honorary discharge from the US Army Reserve Corps.
He is survived by his wife Marcia (Sager) Balter of Wellesley. He was the proud father of Brad (and his wife Laura) of Wellesley, and his son David (and his wife Sarah) of Boston. He was a wonderful grandfather to Stella, Sophie, Annabel, Jacob and Aden. He also held a special place in his heart for his former daughter-in-law Beth of Winchester.
In addition to the expertise and kindness he brought to the relationships with his clients, Bruce was a talented artist specializing in oil painting, and over the last few years had begun new classes with the creation of many new pieces reflecting his keen eye to the world around him. He was known for his wit and humor, leaving many quips and sayings that will be repeated and enjoyed for many generations.
A private remembrance gathering of family and friends will be held in his memory. Donations in his honor may be made to Cambridge Hospital, 1493 Cambridge St, Cambridge MA 02139; to Care Dimensions Hospice House, 125 Winter St, Lincoln MA 01773; or to Old Fella Burke County Animal Rescue, PO Box 1437, Waynesboro GA 30830.

White, Weld was not Bruce's first Brokerage employment, as I sat right behind him at Hayden, Stone, Inc when he joined his brother, Alan and the firm, right out of BC Law school. Archie was a customer and although Alan got his father's stock trade's, Bruce was determined to branch out from the family business and was obviously very successful over the ensuing years. During those years, Archie and Ethel would entertain Alan, Buss Evans and me often at their house for the "Friday night boxing matches" and Ethel would serve a huge roast beef dinner to us all before we went to the TV Room with our cigars. Bruce was not a fan but Alan represented him on those fabulous nights, I will never forget them. When Alan Died, I sat Shiva (as a protestant) for him at Bruce and Marcy's house in Weston and would have done so for Bruce had I known of his passing. God speed, my friend.

The Rosenberg family send our most profound condolences to Marcy and the entire Balter family on Bruce´s passing. I knew Bruce from our years at Newton High and membership in the Olympians. Bruce has skillfully managed our families bond holdings for over 60 years. The world has lost a kind and wonderful soul and I have lost a valued and admired friend. RIP

Bruce was a great municipal bond advisor to me for over 20 years. I respected his knowledge and appreciated his help staying as a small individual holding muni bonds as that market morphed from primarily individual holdings focused on tax-free income to money market and mutual funds focused on yield plays more than income. I will miss his humor, knowledge, and wisdom. Blessed be, Bruce. Rest in peace.
