Carl ANDERSON Obituary

ANDERSON, Carl
William Jr. "Bill"
(Age 91)

Carl William "Bill" Anderson, Jr. died in his home on July 13, 2016 in Spokane, WA at the age of 91. Bill is survived by his children, Dave (Dan Faller) Anderson, Chris Anderson-Hannas (Wayne) and Carol (Jim) Williams all of Spokane; granddaughters Dawn Glass of Belton, TX and Heidi Melton in Germany; great-grandchildren Frances, Charlotte and Christian William Glass of Belton, TX and sister Carol Severson of Lacey, WA. Bill was preceded in death by his wife Frances, sister Esther and brothers Emil, Eric and Eskil.
Bill was born on December 15, 1924 in Spokane to Carl William Anderson and Erika Palm Anderson. He graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in 1943. He played on the basketball team, which won the State Tournament in an undefeated season. As a player, he earned both All-City and All-State honors. One week after graduation, Bill volunteered to go into military service in the Army Air Corps, now the US Air Force. He went to Radio and Gunnery School and then Overseas flight training. Bill was assigned to a B-24 Consolidated Liberator where he served as a Radio Operator/Gunner and flew in six missions before the war ended. In all, Bill totaled 22 years of military service when he retired from the Washington Air National Guard as the State Personnel Director at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
In Bill's college life, he attended WSU and Gonzaga where he played basketball. While at Gonzaga, he fell in love with his wife of 63 years and since she was attending WSU, he moved back to Pullman and finished his undergraduate work there. They were married on August 22, 1949. While at Washington State, they were fortunate to have a visit from Squinty Hunter, Bill's high school coach, who offered him a position back at LC. Bill taught and coached basketball and football for eight years then moved into an administrative training position. He spent two years as the Dean of Students at Spokane Community College, two years as a Dean of Students at Ferris High School, and then went back to Lewis and Clark in 1968 where he was the Principal until 1979 when he retired.
A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at 2:00 pm at Hamblen Park Presbyterian Church, 4102 S. Crestline St., Spokane, WA with a reception to follow at the church. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Bill's life. Memorial contributions may be made to Hamblen Park Presbyterian Church and Lewis and Clark High School, Attn: C. W. Bill was one the kindest and gentlest soul's I have ever had the privilege of knowing. I feel fortunate and blessed to have grown up next door to such a kind and spirited man. I will never forget him singing the "K K K Katy" song when I would see him, and how special it made me feel. Bill you were fiercely loved and will be forever missed. Give Francis a hug for all of us. With deepest sympathy for the Anderson family. Mr. Anderson was my student teaching supervisor at Whitworth in 1982. It was my pleasure and honer to cross paths with him throughout the years since then. His short service in the B-24 was amazing - he once shared a picture with me that he took of a wingman B-24 on a bombing run that was not as fortunate. A true hero.

CW Anderson - Words can not convey my tremendous respect and admiration to my High School Principle and Friend. CW did so much to support every single student. He was responsible for providing such a great environment for learning in academics, sports, and socially, at Lewis and Clark. He was a true war hero, surviving several combat missions in WWll. He encouraged and mentored any student interested in Military Service, and was responsible for assisting many LC Grads and other top students from the Spokane area in attending the Air Force Academy along with Senator Tom Foley. Everyone I know of in the LC Class of 1979 has the utmost respect and love for our Principle. Thank you CW Anderson for the incredible example you set for us and a life well lived! God Bless You!
