GROHS, Charles Allen
March 3, 1925 - August 31, 2018
Chuck was born in Spokane, WA on March 3rd, 1925 to John and Mary Fisher Grohs. He was the middle child with two sisters. He attended Wilson Elementary and Lewis & Clark High School, where he graduated in 1943. Soon after graduation, He joined the U.S. Navy. Following boot camp at Farragut, ID, he served in the Armed Guard as a Gunner's Mate aboard ships in the North Atlantic and South Pacific during World War II.
Following World War II, he joined the inactive Navy Reserves. In 1946, he attended Washington State College (University), where he received his BA degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management in 1950. While at Washington State, he became a member of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. In 1948, he married Barbara McCarty also a graduate of Washington State College (University). In 1951, he was called back into the U.S. Navy during the Korean War Emergency and served in Guam.
After the Korean War, he worked with his father in the Model Coffee Shop and the Johnson Café in Spokane, which our family owned and operated for many years. He retired from the Food Service Department of Deaconess Medical Center in 1990.
Chuck was a loving husband, a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was a loyal friend and loved by all who knew him. He will long be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor, his kindness, his honesty, and his fun-loving approach to life.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Barbara, and two sons: John (Yvette) Bend, OR and Chuck (Stephanie) Napa, CA. He was preceded in death by a third son, Doug (Lori), two sisters: Helen (Lloyd) Garretson and Mary Anne (Jack) Lyons. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Ryan (Holly), Corey (Zoe), Brittany (Jeremy), Christi, Katarina, and Adaira Grohs, and four great-grandchildren: Elena, Michael, Owen and Everett Grohs along with many nieces and nephews. He loved each and every one of his family with an unconditional love that brought joy and humor to all.
He was a member of St. Johns' Cathedral and Brotherhood of St. Andrews, the WSU Alumni Association, Veteran of Foreign Wars, Corbin Community Senior Activity Center, and the South Hill Senior Community Center.
He was recognized, chosen and able to participate in the Honor Flight from Spokane to Washington DC for World War II Veterans.
Chuck enjoyed summers at Twin Lakes, ID and winters in Yuma AZ. In his early years, he loved boating, waterskiing, duck hunting, and cross country skiing. Later in life , he enjoyed walking, fishing, and playing golf. He was an avid WSU Cougar football fan all of his adult life and loved attending Cougar games in Pullman with his sons and grandsons.
He will be missed deeply by all his loved ones and friends
but long remembered for the joy he brought into so many lives.
A celebration of life service will be held in the All Saints Chapel at St. Johns' Cathedral at a later date to be announced shortly.
