Dan WEAVER Obituary

February 1, 1946 - July 7, 2025

Spokane - Dan Weaver of Spokane, WA, unexpectedly passed away on the afternoon of July 7, 2025.

On February 1, 1946, Carl Daniel Weaver was born to Jess and June Weaver at their home in Monroe, WA. At an early age, Dan gravitated to sports which would become his life's passion. In high school he played football, basketball, and baseball for the Monroe Bearcats in the class of 1964. His love for basketball took him to Cheney, WA, where he was recruited to Eastern Washington State College. He graduated in 1968 earning a BA in Journalism. While there, he met Patricia Hughes who he would marry the same year.

After graduating, Dan was drafted into the United States Army, deploying on February 4, 1969, dutifully serving for a year in the Vietnam War, earning the Bronze Star with a V for valor in the 4th Infantry Division.

Upon returning stateside, he quickly got back to his passion for sports, settling down in Port Orchard, WA, with Patricia and their two young sons, Jeremy and Chad. Dan became the sports editor of the Bremerton Sun, writing many articles that would spawn humor or outrage among sports fans, no matter the opinion he enjoyed the feedback. He loved fishing on Puget Sound with his friends and taking his family to every sporting event he could.

In 1982, Patricia passed away, so Dan picked up his two sons and moved to Spokane, WA.

He became a multi-award winning columnist for the Spokane Chronicle, eventually the Spokesman-Review; covering the Seattle Seahawks, Gonzaga basketball, Washington State football, Spokane Chiefs, and investigative sports journalism which sometimes stirred up controversy, but for anyone who knew him, there wasn't a bear he wouldn't poke.

In 1985, Dan married Deborah Johnston, and they had two sons, Casey and Robbie. Enjoying trips to Sandpoint, fun days at Silverwood Theme Park, and motorcycle rides on his 1980 Goldwing.

An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing at the family cabin, hiking, even tackling the local volcanic peaks of Mt. Rainier and Mt. Hood.

Dan loved reading, history, and had a deep love of music and movies. Celebrating every spring traveling to Reno with his sons to enjoy the opening rounds of March Madness.

Dan's love for his family was unmeasurable. He always had time for friends or strangers who needed an ear, advice, or a joke, as he believed humor was the best medicine. He had a zest for life, never wasting a day.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Jess and June Weaver; and wife, Patricia (Hughes) Weaver.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah Weaver; sister, Colleen Carlson; brother, Timothy Weaver; sons, Jeremy (Jill), Chad (Julie), Casey (Allie), and Robbie; grandsons, Jess (Katie), Eric, and Sam, who all loved their "Grandpa GOAT"; granddaughters, Olivia and Everly; niece, Charlotte Zissel; nephew, Ben Weaver; and their families.

A celebration of Dan's life will be held on July 24th, at 1pm, in The Loft at Northern Quest Resort & Casino, Airway Heights, WA.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, charitable donations in his honor/behalf can be made to Veterans Affairs of Spokane.

Yesterday

I met Dan in Port Angeles while he was a sports reporter and I was a marginal member of the high school football and baseball team. He took an interest in me for some reason and was always extremely friendly and interested in me. While interviewing the " player of the game" in the locker room, he would always stop and say "hi" to me.
Years later while I was stationed at Fairchild AFB in Spokane, and he was with the Spokesman-Review we had lunch together and caught up. He had told me when I was in high school that he had served in Vietnam, and now that I was in the Air Force I had gained more of an understanding of the sacrifice he had made.
I thank God for the opportunity to meet Dan, and the impact he made on my life. He was a really good sports reporter, honest and fair. More than that he was a good man.
My condolences to the family in your time of loss.

Dan wrote an article on me right in the middle of my boxing career. We struck up a friendship during the weigh in for my bout at the Cda House of Fury. Needless to say he had a "Dude like" quality about him. I will remember him as a fun, talented and thoughtful guy. RIP MY FRIEND

I´ve known Dan since the first grade. Truly a great man and genuine friend. We would spend years between visits and, when we crossed paths, we would pick right back up like we were in high school again. Speaking of high school, we were chemistry lab partners and somehow managed to impress Mr. Korsak with our great experiments.

I only know Dan Weaver through the stories told by his son Robbie. By no stretch of my imagination Dan was an amazing man, friend, husband, and father. I know Robbie was lucky to have such a great dad. To the Weaver family, I´m so sorry for your loss.

Dan & I along with our friend Ted Both spent many days and evenings together driving the country side with some of Geno's Cold Beer, going to the U & I for dime time. Before he went to Vietnam he and I spent an evening together in Seattle carousing and reliving high school sports and all the good times. He was a special friend to me and many others with his wicked sensed of humor . He was one of the few to purchase my one and only 45 RPM record and always mentioned that he still had the recording, even as late as last years all class reunion. You will be sorely missed my dear old friend

I went to school with Dan from the third grade thru the 12th. Dan was a great friend all thru school. I remember one time in the sixth grade we all went swimming in woods creek, nothing different only it was the first day of March and it was during school. Mr. Frankhouser was our teacher. Lots of memories. I will miss you at the class reunions Dan. Rest in peace my friend.
