Dexter AMEND Obituary

Dad, after completing his race, was called home to Jesus July 10, 2021 just shy of his 102 birthday. He was born in Portland, Oregon to Bert and Hattie Amend September 4, 1919, the youngest of five siblings and was preceded in death by his wife, of 76 years, Yvonne. He is survived by his six children, 15 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren.

He and Yvonne met at Pacific University where he earned his undergraduate degree in Pre-Med. They were married in May of 1942 and began their family in Portland soon after.

After completing medical school at the University of Oregon and being commissioned as a Naval Officer, Dexter was called to serve in Korea as a Marine Corps Combat Surgeon. He also served on the US Hospital Ship, Haven, stationed in Yokushka, Japan. On his return he completed his internship and residency in Urological at Charlotte Memorial Hospital, Charlotte, North Carolina. He and Yvonne then moved with the family to the Spokane Valley in 1955.

Dexter and Yvonne were active leaders in Opportunity Presbyterian Church, and the local Republican Party. Their kid's school activities were central to their lives and Dexter served as team doctor for many CVHS teams. He was elected twice as Spokane County Coroner as well as serving as a medical missionary in Imugan, Philippines after retiring from private pratice.

He enjoyed traveling with Yvonne and family. Attending their grandchildren's, and great-grandchildren's sporting and musical events were especially satisfying. His carvings and drawings showed him as an accomplished artist earning several awards. He loved the farm where he taught us that hard work was not a bad thing, it was just hard.

During his life Dad taught us patience, love, and the importance of caring for all. He lived his life until the end on terms his God and he had worked out.

His legacy can be found in his six children and their spouses; Dexter Amend II and Gail Amend, Harry and Sandy Amend, George and Becky Amend, Robin and Debbie Amend, Rick and Lynne Piper and Jim and Jolynn Amend; along with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Dad lived his life in Christ. It didn't matter who you were, he wanted you to know that Jesus loved you and wanted you in His family. He has gone to prepare a place for us.

So sorry to hear of Dex's death! Had him in a BSF group at the First Covenant Church in Spokane. I always enjoyed Dexter's answers to the question in the series. He showed so much personal insight and thought. His personal relationship with the Lord was so evident! I was impressed with his summer project to memorize I believe it was 1 Peter! He is now most assuredly with our Lord in heaven. Truly a life well spent!
