Dexter SCHWEIM Obituary

SCHWEIM, Dexter C. "Dick" MSGT U.S. Air Force, Retired Our beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away May 24, 2013 at the age of 82 with his family at his side. Dick was born in Detroit, MI where he was raised and educated by his adoptive parents, Dexter and Eloise Schweim until age seventeen when he joined the Army Air Corps with parental permission, being under age. Communication was his field of choice in the military and this took him to England, Turkey, Germany and several U. S. Bases including Fairchild Air Force Base. Dick served twenty-three years in the U.S. Air Force attaining the rank of Master Sergeant and retired in 1971 from McCord Air Force Base. Upon retirement, Dick returned to Spokane where he had met and married his wife during a previous tour of duty. Starting a new career in the restaurant business, he purchased the Dew Drop Inn at the Five Mile area and seven years later, a local donut shop. His next venture was managing several larger establishments in Spokane, Richland, WA, Pendleton, OR and Coeur d' Alene, ID, until he chose to relax and enjoy life. Dick leaves a loving family who will always remember and cherish his caring love, his sense of humor and many stories of life. Dick was the one who always put everyone's needs before his own. He is survived by: his wife of fifty years, Cleone; daughters, Stacy Ritter (Patrick), Suzanne Fouts (Dan) and Brenda Benn (Lonnie); sons, Brad Baker (Jane), Charles, Richard and Glen Schweim from a previous marriage; several grandchildren, including Madeline and Sidney Ritter, Megan and Jordyn Fouts, Erin Cruz (Chris), Adam Benn and Axel Baker; great-grandchildren, Jaelee, Ja'Jandra and Jazmyn Cruz. We want to thank Hospice of Spokane and Hospice House for their wonderful care, and also his special friends at Waffles Plus. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, June 1, 2013 at 3:00pm at Ball & Dodd Funeral Home, 5100 W. Wellesley, Spokane WA.

Correction: It was my Grandma Eloise's memorial, not my Father's.

Uncle Dick, I've always looked up to you as an inspiration to live my life through hard work and perseverance. I asked you at my dad's "James M. Schweim" memorial, why his plan for life didn't work for him as planned? I've never forgotten your answer & have used it as a guide in my own life. You told me "you can't have a plan for life because plans will always change due to unforeseen obstacles" So I asked you how else can I map my life? You wisely told me "you need goals and to never lose sight of them, change as needed to reach them" Those words changed my way through life. Thank You. Proud to be your nephew, Jim Schweim

Cleone, I just had the opportunity to watch this video, again, following our conversation of October 7, 2013. Dick was such a beautiful soul. I hope that you will periodically add pictures to this video as you come across the pics you would like to share. I would be happy to help you access the site and continue to honor his memory. If you would like some techno help, you know how to reach me. I will carry his smile in my memories for a long time. He is missed.

Dexter was very welcoming the first time I met him. He quickly accepted me without reservation. It was an honor to meet an individual who served in the Army Air Corps. As a fellow service member, I would like to thank him for serving his country and leading the way for me to follow.
It's becoming rare to honor and thank our veterans; we should always remember that he gave 23 years of service to his country. I wish I could be be there to honor his passing, but I know in his heart he understands why. I give him my final salute; for being a good family man, for his honorable service to his country and for being a fellow wingman who exemplified our core values. I thank you M/Sgt Schweim. I will never forget all those talks we had with a cup of coffee in our hands...you will always be remembered.

"Dick" I never met you. But oh what a great man you must have been. Your daughter Stacy and your grandchildren Madelyn and Sydney are so incredible that I want to say "thank you for giving this world such a gift." You left your mark on them and your mark lives on and shines bright through them. This world is truly a better place because Dexter C. "Dick" Schweim was born!! You will be greatly missed.
