BATAI,
Egon J.
Egon Batai passed away September 8, 2017 in Tacoma, WA surrounded by family. He was born in Budapest, Hungary on April 12, 1924. He married Katalin Kopornoky in 1947 and had two daughters. After escaping Hungary during the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, the family settled in Spokane, where Egon was a well known commercial artist, photographer and portrait painter.
The "host with the most" enjoyed entertaining family and friends with Hungarian dishes spiced with his jokes. After dinner, the dining room rug was often rolled up and Egon provided dance music on the piano or his accordion. Self-taught, he had the gift to play by ear and was always the resident musician at the many get-togethers with friends. He was an excellent bowler and with his wife were members of several Spokane bowling leagues, winning many awards.
After 50 years in Spokane, Egon and Katalin relocated to Tacoma in 2006 to be closer to family. Egon is survived by daughters Andrea (Patrick) Weller and Agnes (John) Weller; six grandchildren Joska, Jeremy, Katie, Adam, Jesse and Sean Weller and 8 great-grand- children. He was preceded in death by his wife, Katalin in 2013 and granddaughters Jeanna and Christa.
Celebration of Life and Memorial will be held at the Jesuit House chapel at Gonzaga University on September 23rd at noon.

When I was young and a contracted model in Spokane, Egon photographed me several times for print advertisements for newspaper, magazine and billboards. I didn't know who he was, and of his talent and work at the time....But later discovered I was in the presence of greatness!! His humor, kindness, talent and his extreme professionalism are things I will always remember. It was an honor to have known him, and an honor to have been photographed by him. I'll always remember him with great fondness. Egon Baiai was one in a million.
