Emma BURLEY Obituary

BURLEY, Emma (Schmierer) (Age 93) Of Millwood, WA entered into the Kingdom of Heaven in the early morning of October 14, 2014. Emma was born on May 6, 1921 in Gackle, ND until her family moved to Savage, MT. As a child, she helped tend the family grain farm with her father, mother, six brothers and one sister. No stranger to hard work or adventure, Emma left home in her late teens and moved to Spokane, WA. In April of 1942, Emma and her first husband welcomed the birth of their only daughter, Rosalie. Later on, Emma, her husband, Charles Burley, and her daughter moved to the town of Millwood, WA where they would own and operate a Five and Dime variety store and Burley's TV Sales and Service. After the death of Charles in 1969, Emma worked at Two Swabbies for over 20 years, and then True Value Hardware. Emma has been a long time active member of Millwood Community Presbyterian Church where she served her Lord and Savior as a Deacon and participated in many church activities. Emma enjoyed her Women's Association, Crafters, Logos, Family Camp, cooking in the church kitchen and the annual church rummage sale in which she worked every year until her passing. Emma loved to play cards and board games and watch her grandchildren grow. She was no stranger to sorrow and hard times, but her strength, humility, love, compassion and courage will stand the test of time. She is preceded in death by her father and mother, Karl and Elizabeth Becker Schmierer; six brothers, John, Jacob, Aron, William, Karl and Ervin Schmierer; sister, Eva Oberhofer; daughter, Rosalie Craig (Burley); and grandson, Robert Craig. She is survived by her brother, Gottlieb (Irene) Schmierer; sister-in-law, Elma (Aron) Schmierer; grandchildren, Deanne Cuevas and Rodney (Linda) Craig; three great-grandchildren, Teresa Cuevas (Russell), Nicolas Craig, Amanda Formato (Chris); four great-great-grandchildren, Johnathan Greever, Matthew Plue, Aksel and Asha Formato; close friend/niece, Lorraine Gilbert; and many nieces, nephews and adopted grandchildren. Emma's memorial will be held at Millwood Community Presbyterian Church, 3223 N. Marguerite, Spokane, WA on October 24, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. Cookie reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Hospice of Spokane.

I am so sorry that I missed the memorial. I just came across the article yesterday. Although her and my uncle Clarence divorced years ago I have always referred to her as aunt Emma. You know that she traveled west from eastern Montana to Lamont, Wa with my Mom. They were both just young teenagers.

Aunite Em, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the love, patience, and acceptance you gave my mother Renee. She has so few people that open their heart to her and you did without hesitation. I cherish the memories of visiting your home, playing monopoly, hearing Robbie yell at the t.v. during football games, and enjoying your homemade biscuits and strawberry jam. As an adult, I could understand what a strong woman you were and I truly admire that. Thank you for all your kindness and love. You are missed. I look forward to seeing you again. I love you always.

Until We Meet Again

Each morning when we awake
we know that you are gone.
And no one knows the heartache
As we try to carry on.

Our hearts still ache with sadness
and many tears still flow.
What it meant to lose you,No one will ever know.

Our thoughts are always with you,
your place no one can fill.
In life we loved you dearly,
In death we love you still.

There will always be a heartache,
and often a silent tear,
But always a precious memory
Of the days when you were here.

If tears could make a staircase,
And heartaches make a lane,
We'd walk the path to heaven
And bring you home again.

We hold you close within our hearts,
And there you will remain,
To walk with us throughout our lives
Until we meet again.

Our family chain is broken now,
And nothing will be the same,
But as God calls us one by one,
The chain will link again.

I love you and miss you so much. I will work hard every day to do the right things and take care of my family like you took care of us. I know you are smiling down on us and giving me the strength to continue on. Until we see each other again. Love you.

We will all miss you so much. When we moved here in 1991 you welcomed us into your loving home and treated us like family. Your gentle heart and caring for others is one of the things that made you so special. Love you and I will see you again one day.
