Ervin Hood Obituary

HOOD, Ervin Odell "Tubby" October 11, 1930 - May 27, 2009 Born in Blue Mt. Arkansas on October 11, 1930 to Walter L. Hood and Mary E. Emerson, the 14th of 15 children. Graduated in 1948 from Fairfax High, Fairfax, OK. After graduation Ervin moved to Spokane to join his brothers in their masonry business. (He later owned and operated Northwest Masonry for 50+ years). During his years of building, he left homes and commercial buildings all over Eastern Washington and even Alaska. There is something very comforting in viewing these structures - and those built by his brothers - that will last for hundreds of years. Ervin was drafted into the Army, served in Korea and rose to the rank of Sergeant First Class before his discharge in 1953. He joined the VFW and continued his membership the rest of his life. He and wife Nancy raised three children: David Wayne Hood (Tammie), Kathy Ann (Jeff) Cheney, and Carolyn Marie (Karl) Moldrem. They have eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Ervin married Bonnie (Thune) in 1984 and increased the child count by four: Deanne Ray (Mohammed) Salleh, Todd (Debbie) Thune, Teresa (Tom) Raney, Cynthia Lynn Thune - and by seven more grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Over the years, Erv enjoyed dancing with "his bride', boating, camping and fishing all over the Northwest, gardening, the little Egypt church family, and his little four-legged companion, Sampson. Erv also greatly enjoyed driving the bus for the Davenport School District the last seven years of his life. He often had stories about the delightful children. Erv and Bonnie built their dream home in Deer Meadows overlooking Lake Roosevelt in 1998. Erv's craftsmanship in the brickwork and especially the amazing stone fireplace in the living room are a wonderful legacy for a man who above all things was a builder. In his later years, he found serenity and peace looking out at Lake Roosevelt from this haven. Ervin was preceded in death by his parents and 13 siblings. One brother, Wayne Hood, lives in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. There will be a celebration of his life on Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church at 41697 State Route 25 north of Davenport, Washington. A graveside service with honor guard will follow at 4:00 p.m. at the Mountain View Cemetery in Davenport. Memorials may be made if desired to Christ Lutheran Church (Egypt) in Davenport, Washington or Christian Heritage School, P.O. Box 118, Edwall, WA 99008. SPOKANE CREMATION & BURIAL SERVICE 2832 N. June 3, 2009

Dearest Bonnie & family,
We just heard from the postmaster here in Coulee Dam today, June 2nd, 2009. We want you to know how much we enjoyed knowing Tubby throughout the 25 years we've lived here as his next door neighbor in Lone Pine. I remember so well one afternoon sitting at our dining room table with him sharing "his love and pride for you, Bonnie" and then his favorite Bible verse, II Timothy 2:15 "Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." That was so special to me. Also remembering the precious years with Mabel Youngs telling me about "Tubby" during her many many years here. We have 2 retaining walls plus the masonry fireplace here in our home that encompasses the entire south wall of our living room. His legacy of work will be remembered for many many years to come as you mentioned so lovingly. A wonderful neighbor and friend, always right there to give a helping hand when needed. Sorry we didn't know in time to join you in celebration of his life. With much sympathy and many years of memories, Cary and Linda Sherman
