Gwendolyn MITCHELL Obituary

Gwendolyn Lea Mitchell (Funk), age 76, died of cancer on December 15, 2022, at her home in Medford, OR.

Gwen was born at Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane, WA, on August 24, 1946, to Albert Harvey Funk (renowned mid-century modern architect) and Ruby Mae Funk (Liles). Her grandfather was the longtime city commissioner and mayor, Leonard Funk. Gwen was predeceased by her mother in 1961, and her father in 1986. Gwen attended St. Augustine's grade school, Sacajawea Junior High, and Lewis and Clark High School, graduating in 1964. She graduated from the University of Washington School of Nursing in 1968 and was a labor and delivery nurse at Rogue Valley Regional Medical Center for over 35 years. Gwen was a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority.

Gwen is survived by her son, Brian Keith Magnussen (Tari Hugo), and their sons: Cameron and Connor of Vancouver, WA., and her son John Tyler Magnussen (Lesley Martin), and their daughters: Riley and Seneca of Denver, CO, her brother, Leonard Liles Funk (Marilyn McKeown) of Arlington, VA, sister Cydne Christine Bennington (Claude) of Shelton, WA, Nieces and nephews, Todd Bennington (Lapasrada) and son Davin of Woodbridge, VA, Sean Bennington (Raelyn) of Rosalia, WA, Andrew Funk (Jessica Schipp) and daughter Stephany of Alexandria, VA, and Kathryn Jauhar Funk (J.J.) of Los Angeles, CA.

Gwen was an active member of the Oregon Nurses Association. She was an avid bridge player, hiker, cyclist, skier, world traveler, and an attentive and loving mother and grandmother. She was a good friend to many others.

A memorial will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery in Spokane at a later date.

Such a loss of a most wonderful woman. I only new Gwen from high school and remember her as always friendly and kind to all. My condolences to her family.
