Howard WILCOX Obituary

February 16, 1937 - October 3, 2025

Spokane - Howard G. Wilcox, a sinner saved by the unearned grace of God, died on Friday, October 3, 2025, of neuroendocrine carcinoma.

Howard was born on February 16, 1937, to Gordon and Corinne Wilcox in Chicago, Illinois. He had a younger sister, Nancy.

In 1957, he married his college sweetheart, Miriam (Karnehm). Their 68 years of marriage were blessed with three wonderful children and eight delightful grandchildren: Jennifer Shull (Steve/Blake and Hannah); Jeffrey (Amy/Jonah, Max, and Sophie); and Joshua (Holly/Drake, Kohlton, and Jack).

Howard graduated from Wheaton College in Illinois and from the University of Illinois College of Medicine. He completed his post-doctoral training in Internal Medicine and Nephrology at Presbyterian St. Luke's Hospital in Chicago and the University of Utah Hospital. He was a faculty member at the University of Utah (15 years), on the staff of the Salt Lake City V.A. Medical Center (15 years), Chief of Staff of the Spokane V.A. Medical Center (16 years), and a faculty member at the University of Washington Medical School (15 years).

Howard was elected a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP) by direct election. He served proudly in the United States Army Medical Corps. He was commissioned for 36 years, retiring after many years as a Colonel. His active-duty service included the Vietnam Era and Desert Storm.

After his retirement in 1995, Howard and Miriam traveled extensively, visiting all seven continents and all 50 states. He remained active in the affairs of his church, and more recently, he and Miriam moved to Rockwood at Whitworth Retirement Center, with its superb and supportive residents.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at 1:00 PM at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Spokane.

The family is deeply grateful for the excellent care provided by the Spokane V.A. Medical Center. The care overseen by Dr. Kristina Bowen and her staff was always kind and supportive - our heartfelt thanks.
