Jerry WILMOT Obituary

Jerry Eugene Wilmot was called to heaven the morning of Dec 24, 2021. Just as he did on their first date, Jerry was holding his wife's hand as he passed peacefully in his sleep.

Jerry loved Jesus, Family, Kids, and Sports. And if he could combine any of those things, it was a good day. At his core, Jerry was a teacher and a coach. Whether he was teaching high school, coaching basketball, or leading a bible study, he did it all with joy in his heart. As an active member of First Presbyterian Church, Jerry served as a deacon, led men's groups, drove the church bus, and showed his love for Jesus by helping wherever he could.

With a posse of their dearest friends, Jerry and Bonnie spent time skiing and bicycle touring. He never missed a Bulldogs game or a Seahawks party. A true adventurer, he enjoyed backpacking, camping, water skiing, fly fishing on the St. Joe River and Kelly Creek, and walking his dogs. Most of all he loved spending time with his family and friends. He met his wife, Bonnie, in 1997 and they were married in 1998, after the proposal of the century!

Jerry was born March 29, 1936, to Gerald and Leone Wilmot in Macomb IL. He graduated from high school in Colorado Springs and earned a bachelor's degree from Western Illinois University. He proudly served in the US Army from 1959-1961, and later attended Northern Arizona University, earning his master's degree.

Jerry began his teaching and coaching career in Davenport IA, later moving to Moorpark CA. In 1974 he relocated his family to Cheney WA, teaching and coaching at the local high school until his retirement. In later years he coached teams at Eastern and Whitworth College. Jerry found a home with Northwest Basketball Camp where he could share his love of Christ and basketball with athletes across the world. His coaching endeavors led him to South America, East, and West Germany, Australia, and the UK.

Jerry is survived by his wife Bonnie, his sister Peggy, his children Teresa (Chris), Jon (Jeanie), Erin (Doug), Justin (Amy), and Bethany (Oliver), and his grandchildren Yukai, Kol, Kiah, Rylie, Logan, Annika, and Landon. We loved him dearly, as we know he loved us.

Jerry is preceded in death by his parents, his son Jimmy and grandson Austin.

Services will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Spokane on January 13, 2022, at 2:00 p.m.

In Lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to Union Gospel Mission, NBC Camps, or the charity of your choice.

Jerry was best coach I had. He knew the game. He understood people. He treated players with respect. He challenged us to grow. He was a leader who served. He lived his faith. I first knew him as a leader and coach at NBC camps in the mid-1970s. He coached a group of us on NBC's first international tour team to South America in the summer of 1977. We kept in touch, off and on, in the years that followed. And he visited my father & mother on occasion. I thought of him often in the last 40+ years. I plan to shoot a few free throws with him in heaven ... and thank him again for really believing in me during those years when I was trying to figure out what I believed in.

I always considered Jerry a kind friend and constant source of encouragement. I hold fond memories of our time working together at NBC and coaching together at Whitworth. I always felt believed in. My deepest condolences to his family.

Some of my best memories of Jerry were during our years of coaching basketball at Cheney. We took many, many trips throughout the Inland Empire to scout opponents for Coach Humphrey. Every trip included a stop for pie and coffee or tea at Marie Callender“s. During those many hours together, we shared countless stories about basketball, families, and our love of teaching and coaching young people. One coach at the state tournament actually asked me if we had his playbook! We must have done our job! Thank you for the memories.

It said to share a memory, but I have so many. From hanging out with my uncle Jerry at his beach house (the floor was always covered with sand) when I was little, to getting hit with the TV Guide every time I stood in front of the television while he was watching a game! Most of all, I remember a true man of God, a loving uncle, brother, father, son, grandpa and husband! So many looked up to him as I know I sure did. Fun memories of spending time with him and my mom and watching true love between a brother and sister. They always looked out for each other. He was an amazing man and he will forever be in my heart! He lived a life like no other and has experienced more awesome things than anyone could ever dream of. I have and always will look up to him and cherish him in my heart until we meet again. Love you Uncle!!!
