John was born in Colville, WA, to Howard & Louise Root. The family moved from Kettle Falls to Omak, then to Spokane, where he graduated from Rogers H.S. He moved to Wenatchee, where he joined the National Guard. He married Teddy Lee Munch, and they moved to Seattle and later to Bainbridge Island. After retiring from the grocery business in 2003, John moved to Sequim, WA, where he enjoyed fishing, crabbing, and motorhome trips.
Preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Edward, Betty, and George.
Survived by son, Jon, and daughter-in-law, Julie; granddaughter, Tiffany, and her husband, Mike; and siblings, Frances Jarrett, Delbert Root, and Ruby Dykes, along with several nieces and nephews.
