John DANIEL Obituary
December 31, 1944 – October 10, 2025
John Fredrick Daniel, beloved father, grandfather, friend, and lifelong Spokane resident, is now at peace as of October 10, 2025. Born on December 31, 1944, John lived a life defined by joy, generosity, adventure, and an unshakable love for family and community.
Growing up in Spokane, John attended Emmerson Elementary and Havermale Jr. High before graduating from North Central High School in 1963. He was a gifted athlete whose talent on the football field earned him a scholarship to the University of Idaho, where he proudly wore the Vandal colors and became a lifelong supporter. While at Idaho, he was an active and proud member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, forming lifelong friendships and memories.
In 1968, John fulfilled a dream when he signed a professional football contract with the Dallas Cowboys. Though his professional career was brief, the discipline, teamwork, and perseverance he learned through football shaped him for life.
John was preceded in death by his parents, William and Clare Daniel; his brother, Doug; and his sisters, Marilyn and Annabelle. He is survived by his three sons - Troy (wife Kristen), Adam (wife Jen), and Jason (wife Katie) - and by his eight cherished grandchildren: Owen, Cooper (wife Alyssa), Lily, Kylie, Lainey, Dalton, Kinsley, and Macie. He also leaves behind his loyal black lab and best buddy, Trigger, and his devoted partner and friend, Kathy Steblaj, with whom he shared love, laughter, and companionship in the later years of his life.
John lived every day to the fullest. He was an adventurer at heart who found peace and joy in the outdoors - fly-fishing the St. Joe River (especially the ravine at Marble Creek), spending time at the family cabin on Priest Lake, hiking, snow skiing at Mt. Spokane, Schweitzer, and Big Mountain, snorkeling and scuba diving during his travels. He competed in triathlons, loved riding the Hiawatha Trail, and cherished time spent at Harrison Lake, Newman Lake, and in Mexico, where friends affectionately referred to him as "Juan Carlos."
He also had a playful spirit that extended beyond the outdoors - he loved dancing with his "dance crew" and spending time playing Texas Hold 'em with his monthly poker group. Those gatherings were full of laughter, storytelling, and the kind of easy friendship he nurtured so naturally.
Affectionately known as "Jolly John," he was the embodiment of kindness and positivity. His infectious smile and lighthearted humor made him a joy to be around. People often said the same thing about him: "John was the nicest guy I've ever known." His sons and grandchildren were his pride and joy, and he made sure they always knew it - never missing a birthday (and never letting anyone forget his, either).
Professionally, John built a long and successful career in sales, spending most of his years with IBM and Eastman Kodak before retiring. He approached his work - and his life - with dedication, warmth, and integrity.
At home, John was meticulous and proud of it. He took great care in maintaining his yard and garden, ensuring everything looked beautiful and "parked out." It was one of his great pleasures, a reflection of his love for order, detail, and pride in his home.
He was a gifted storyteller and natural entertainer, often "holding court" around a campfire, spinning tales that drew laughter and connection. He loved the holidays, gatherings with family and friends, and always found ways to bring joy, humor, and lightness to those around him.
John lived with a huge heart - always putting others before himself, always ready to lend a hand, share a smile, or drop everything for family. His kindness and care left an enduring impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Above all, John was proud to be an Idaho Vandal. He followed his team faithfully and carried that pride throughout his life, sharing it with his family and friends.
John Fredrick "Jolly" Daniel will be remembered for his generosity, adventurous spirit, and endless positivity. His presence made life brighter, and his legacy of love and laughter will live on through the countless lives he touched.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered with a smile.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, November 6, from 5-8pm, at Darcy's Restaurant in Spokane Valley.
