John RHOAD Obituary

April 10, 1943 - January 23, 2025

Spokane - John Charles Rhoad, 81, of Spokane, WA, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2025. John was born on April 10, 1943, in Spokane to John and Louise Rhoad. He was a beloved father, brother, grandfather, and close friend to many, who will be deeply missed.

John attended Shadle Park High School, graduating in 1961. He enlisted in the United States Navy, where he proudly served as a Yeoman aboard the submarine, USS Darter.

After the military, John dedicated most of his life to working as a diamond and jewelry salesman. Later in life, and into retirement, he pursued his passion for golf, working as a Teaching Pro and Course Marshall throughout the Northwest and in Fountain Hills, Arizona.

Those who knew John (Thunder) will remember his infectious smile, touching laughter, sense of humor, his deep-rooted faith in Jesus, and unwavering commitment to spreading love and kindness to everyone he encountered. He had a rare gift for making others smile and laugh, leaving a lasting impact on all who crossed his path.

John's memory lives on through his daughter, Michelle (Brian) Smasne; sister, Vicki Van Slyke; cherished grandchildren, Riley, Owen, Richard, Shawna and Justin; and former spouse, Judy. He also leaves behind many other family members and friends who will sadly miss him.

John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Louise; brother, David; daughter, Teresa Shaffer; and son, Steve Rhoad.

Per John's wishes, there will be no public memorial service. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the American Diabetes Foundation, in honor of his memory.
