Kiso Kosai Obituary

KOSAI, Kiso (Age 92) Succumbed to pneumonia and renal failure August 5, 2010 at HighlineMedical Center, Burien, WA. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary(née Mukai), after 61 years of marriage. He is survived by three children,Kenneth, Terry and Kathleen Peterson. Kiso was born October 10, 1917 inAuburn, WA, the son of Japanese immigrants Kiichiro Kosai and Sumi(née Teramura) Kosai. He was one of five sons and four daughters. His family owned a dairy and vegetable farm at the site now occupied by the Emerald Downs race track. The Kosai family was sent during WWII to Pinedale, Tule Lake, and then Minidoka internment camps. Kiso was released from Tule Lake to do farm work in Montana where he met and wed his wife, Mary Mukai. In 1944 Mary and Kiso settled in Spokane, Washington where he worked for the Great Northern Railway handling mail. He was drafted into military service and spent 1945-1946 in Guam with the HeadquartersSquadron of the 20th Army Air Force as an automotive equipment operator. After separation from service, he returned to Spokane and the Great Northern Railway, retiring as foreman in 1977. For most of his years in Spokane, and into retirement in Auburn, he operated a part-time landscape maintenance business. He and his wife moved back to Auburn in 1982 for 18 years, and then lived for five years in Puyallup. After his wife's death in 2005, heresided in Burien. In addition to his children Kiso is survived by three grandchildren (Kim Kosai, Nicole Payne and Brandon Kosai) five step grandchildren (Debi Roman, Gail Loveless, Tami Bettermann, Chip Peterson and Karen Gooch), a great-grandchild (Colin Payne), and ten step great-grandchildren. Three sisters, Kiyoko Ando, Mitsuko Matsuyama, and Yoneko Tamura, as well as numerous nephews, nieces and cousins, also survive him. A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 28, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at GraceCommunity Church, 1320 Auburn Way South, Auburn, WA 98002. Graveside services will be the same day at 4:00 p.m. at Washington Memorial Park, 16445 International Boulevard, SeaTac, WA 98188.
