Lois HILDAHL Obituary
September 2, 1945 - August 21, 2025
Mrs. Lois Marie Hildahl (née Engh), age 79, passed away peacefully on August 21, 2025, in Blanchard, Idaho. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Lois lived a life rooted in faith, family, and service to others. Born on September 2, 1945, in Watertown, South Dakota, Lois was the daughter of Rev. Harold and Evelyn Engh. She spent her formative years surrounded by the values of faith and compassion that would guide her throughout her life. After graduating from Fertile-Beltrami High School in Minnesota in 1963, she pursued her calling in nursing at Fairview Nursing School, becoming a registered nurse. Lois began her nursing career at the University of Minnesota while supporting her husband Byron through dental school - a testament to her unwavering dedication and partnership. During the Vietnam War era, Lois supported young mothers at the Twenty-Nine Palms Navy base as they learned to care for their newborns. At the same time, she stood steadfastly beside Byron as he served in the military. After relocating to Spokane, Washington, she worked at St. Luke's Hospital for a year before choosing to focus on raising their three sons with love and care. Lois's love for music was a lifelong passion - she found joy in singing and playing both piano and French horn. Her musical spirit was matched by an adventurous one; she traveled extensively throughout her life to favorite destinations including Israel, Norway, and Tahiti. She cherished time spent with loved ones-whether gathered around a table playing pinochle or cribbage, enjoying a glass of wine while working on puzzles or photo albums, or sharing laughter during tennis matches, cruises and church gatherings. Her warmth radiated through every interaction. Lois is survived by her beloved husband of 58 years, Dr. Byron Hildahl; sons Mark (Kirstin), Jeff (Janelle), and Jon (Michelle); and grandchildren Tristan (Jacalyn), Ryan (Zuri), Sarah, Julia, Thomas, Andrew, Rachel, Benjamin, and Victoria. She is also remembered fondly by siblings Ken (Solvig) Engh, Philip (Marlys) Engh, Rev. James Engh, and sister Dorothy (William) Harstad. She was preceded in death by her parents Rev. Harold and Evelyn Engh; eldest brother Raymond Engh; and sister-in-law Sharon (James) Engh. A woman of deep faith who grew up as the daughter of a Lutheran pastor, Lois credited Jesus as the source of all blessings in her life. Her spiritual devotion shaped every chapter of her journey and left an enduring legacy for those who knew her. Lois touched countless lives with her kindness and grace. May her memory and favorite Bible verse bring comfort to all who were blessed to know her, "Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me - practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you." Philippians 4:8-9. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, September 5, 2025, at 2:00 PM, at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, at 9704 North Division Street.
