Louis Henry SAXBY

1924 - 2019

SAXBY, LouisHenry (Age 94) Louis Saxby passed away peacefully on January 4, 2019 surrounded by his family. He was born July 16, 1924 in Roslyn, Washington to Gladys and George Saxby. He grew up in Port Orchard, Washington and attended South Kitsap High School. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in the South Pacific during WWII. After returning from the war he worked as a truck driver for logging companies in the North Cascades and the Oregon Coast. While in Oregon he met his future wife Hazel. Hazel and Louie were married on June 5, 1948 and had five children. They moved back to Washington and lived in Edmonds and Seattle before settling in Spokane in 1970. While in Spokane, Louie drove truck for the Grange and Cenex companies, delivering fuel and fertilizer to the farmers of Eastern Washington. Louis was recognized and commended for driving seven million miles without an accident. He retired in 1985 after an icy accident near Rosalia. Louie took his love of the road to restoring Ford Model As or buying classic cars and attending car shows. He was a member of the local Model A club and enjoyed touring in his Fords. His kids called him "Hot Rod Louie". He also loved his early mornings with the crew at Mike's Donuts, Louis never met a maple bar he didn't like. Louie is preceded in death by his wife Hazel, son Lyle and Lyle's life partner Sally Moore. He is survived by his brother Loren Saxby of Edmonds; sons Larry (Karin) Saxby of Seattle, Jon Saxby of Seattle, Darrel (Cheryl) Saxby of Spokane and daughter Maureen (Paul) Dodroe of Spokane; grandchildren Rhonda (Brian) Ward, Sean (Kara) Saxby, Jesse Saxby, Hailey (Robert) Sandeno, Rachel Saxby and five great- grandchildren. Louie embodied the best attributes of the "Greatest Generation"; personal responsibility, integrity, humility, and a work ethic that never wavered even in his final years. Louis will be missed greatly by his family and friends. We would like to thank the dedicated staff at Evergreen Fountains for the wonderful care given him in recent years. At his request no service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of Spokane in his memory.
