Marie Strick Obituary

STRICK,
Marie
Elizabeth
(Age 99)

1911 - 2011

Passed away August 20, 2011 in Spokane Valley, WA She was born December 11, 1911 in Douglas, WA to George and Mary Willms. Her siblings called her Marie, but she was known as Betty to others. Marie married James M. Strick on August 10, 1931. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in the Spokane Valley. Marie is survived by her children, Barbara Korling of Spokane, WA, Shirley Thierry of Bellevue, WA and J.R. "Bob" Strick of Kettle Falls, WA; sisters, Dorothy Barrett, Esther Gallaher and Florence Smith, 18 grandchildren and many great and great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James Strick; son, Stanley Strick and brothers, Charles, John and Albert Willms.

Marie grew up on a wheat farm near Douglas, WA. and began cooking from the chuck wagon for the harvest crew when she was eight years old. Marie graduated from Waterville High School where she played on the girls basketball team. She married James Strick and they raised four children in the Spokane Valley. Jim and Marie began square dancing in the 1950's at Mitch's Barn on Mt. Spokane. They square danced around the country and Canada, in a group called "Pistols & Petticoat's". They danced and traveled with their dear friends who affectionately called themselves the "Same Old Bunch" or SOB's. Marie and Jim enjoyed spending their winters in Yuma, Az. She was active in many activities including making jewelry, participating in potlucks, and playing golf. She was especially proud of the hole in one she made and the trophy she was awarded at age 81 by Roger's Golf and Country Club in Yuma.

The family would like to thank the Kelli Pefley family for their years of visitation and spiritual uplifting after the passing of her husband Jim Strick. They also wish to give special thanks to Vicki Tomsha for her personal care and attention to Marie over the last two years.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, September 24, 2011 at 11 AM at the funeral home.
