Mary CHAPIN Obituary
Mary was born in August 1954 to her father, Howard Gilbert Chapin, and mother, Barbara Jean Lasher Cole in Albuquerque, NM. She attended Glover Junior High and graduated from Shadle Park HS in 1972. After attending Whitworth College for two years (1972 – 1974), she moved to Chicago and worked as a switchboard operator for the O'Hare International Airport Hilton, winning top employee awards for her service. In 1983 she moved back to Spokane and worked at Sacred Heart Hospital as a switchboard operator for more than 30 years. She was known by many as the 'voice of the hospital' as she paged patients and staff alike. Mary was a dedicated and faithful Christian, very active for years as a member of South Hill Bible Church in Spokane. Despite modest resources, she made financial support to church and mission groups a priority in her life. Her community of friends there built a circle of care around her---a testament to their love and service.
Preceded in death by our father in 1966 and mother in 2005, she is survived by her loving twin brothers Dennis Wesley Chapin and his wife, Debbie Chapin; Douglas Howard Chapin, and his wife, Ma. Del Socorro Chavez Heredia; her younger brother, Paul Hartman Chapin, and his wife, Susan Chapin; as well as numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and nephews.
Our family sincerely thanks Fairview Assisted Living, Davita Kidney
Center, and Providence Sacred Heart and Deaconess for their excellent care of Mary over the years. The Fairview staff especially considered her part of their extended family.
On Saturday, March 18, 2023, at 1 pm, a memorial service will be held for Mary at South Hill Bible Church at 958 East 29th. More details regarding the service can be obtained by calling the church at (509) 838-2242. Mary will be interred near her parents and grandparents during a private family service at Spokane Memorial Gardens following.
Mary lived a quiet life, and her courage and cheerful spirit in the face of many challenges were an example to all who knew her.

Those of us from Sacred Heart who worked with and knew Mary loved her. It only took a short time to find out that she was a believer in Christ. She would take the time to stop by my desk when she was either coming in to work or leaving from work, and we had the best conversations. We both found encouragement in our discussions because they always ended up centered on Jesus. Indeed she is present with the Lord!
