Michael KLEIN Obituary

KLEIN,
Michael J.

Michael J. Klein, beloved husband of 54 years of Dianne M. Klein departed our lives on November 25, 2017 due to complications from heart failure. Mike will be remembered for his love of family, strong work ethic, sense of humor, life-long friendships and concern for others. Mike was born June 4, 1940 in Vancouver, WA. Mike attended Central Catholic High School; he earned his Eagle Scout award as well as the Al Atare Dei award. Mike earned his business degree from Gonzaga University and Masters in Marketing from University of Nevada-Reno. He served in the Army for two years and was also an officer. Following this service, Mike worked for the Pacific Telephone Company and then spent the rest of his career at Cominco American and then Agrium Fertilizers in Calgary, Alberta, Canada as Vice President of Human Resources. He was the author of two books, a bucket list goal. Contributing to the community was important to Mike and he gave back by being involved with Big Brothers/Big Sisters, many years serving others in the Catholic Church, mentoring young people as they began their careers, serving on the Sacred Heart Hospital Board, Chamber of Commerce and Medical Service Corporation Board. Mike also trained to mediate and advocate for children's rights during divorce proceedings in Canada and went above and beyond to help the parents mend their communication gaps toward the greater good of the family. Mike's greatest joy was time spent with his family. Time spent at the lake, at the movies, laughing and hanging out with Dianne, Mary, Rich and Michelle was golden. He took immense joy in his grandchildren; Christopher, Sarah and Grace. Holding them, reading them books and playing outside are just a few of the ways he showed his love for them. He always loved biking, running, cross country skiing, tennis and playing basketball. He was a Zag's basketball fan long before it was cool to be one! When Mike became disabled 15 years ago we heard countless stories of kindness he gave to others. We were overwhelmed by these stories of support and caring. Mike never needed credit for helping others; he just did what needed to be done. The family is incredibly grateful for the wonderful and loving care provided by his caregiver P. Andy Craig. The family also thanks Pat Shine and Gordon Budke for their help. We are also grateful to the many friends who stepped up to help us over the last 15 years. Deep gratitude to Don Curran for: weekly communion, compassionate prayers, and wise counsel, thus allowing Mike to maintain his abiding, life-long faith. He did this for 15 years. Mike was blessed with excellent medical care and we are grateful for Dr. Karen Stanek and Dr. Daniel Dionne. Special thanks to Msgr. Tim Murphy, a life-long friend of Mike's for continued friendship and for presiding over Mike's upcoming Funeral Mass. Mike is predeceased by his loving parents Ben and Helen Klein. He is survived by his loving wife Dianne (who cared for him at home for 15 years), daughters Mary (Rich, grandchildren, Sarah and Grace), Michelle (grandchild, Christopher), sister Patricia Carrico (Pat) and brother Bernard Klein, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mike will always be remembered for his loving kindness, the way he took care of his family and his strength. Mike's Funeral Mass will be celebrated December 5, 2017 at Our Lady of Fatima, 3327 S. Perry, at 10:00am with a reception to follow at Luna Restaurant. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Spokane.

My wife Shirley and I always remember the strong work ethic and moral standard Mike maintained while he and I worked together in Calgary. We also admired him for his athletic prowess which included biking in the Cascade Mountains.

During his retirement party from Agrium, he cited how much he was looking forward to returning to his beloved Spokane in his dream house. It was such a shock when he was struck with his disabling illness shortly after, denying both him and Diane of living out a long and healthy retirement.
May he rest in peace - Bob & Shirley Ward

Dear Dianne, and Rich and Mary,
It was a delight to meet both you and Mike over the years as you visited Mary's home in Sammamish, as we are their neighbors. We are thankful that Mike is finally in the presence of his Lord and Savior--healed and whole! Yet we mourn for your loss of your life partner, and for Mary's family, as well. You all are in our prayers. May God bind up your hearts in the days and months ahead.

Dianne --
So sorry to hear of Mike's passing. Great memories of the many times with the Lilac City Investment Club activities and Mike's always fun participation. Though I've been gone from the "Spokane Scene" for many years, Mike has often been in my thoughts. Blessings to you and the family ---

Dear Dianne and family,
Barbara and I are very sorry to hear of Mike's passing. I met Mike in the third grade at PAV and have many fond memories. Grade, high school, Boy Scouts, Altar boys (Mike was the other server at the first mass I served at St. James) and the sharing of friends(especially Ken and Denny). We knew early on what a lot of Mike's friends and co-workers learned later, Mike was
always a gentle man and a gentleman.
A special love and thank you to you Dianne for being a very special angel in Mike's life. Clair and Barbara Ueltschi

Dear Diane and family, was so saddened to hear of Mike's death. I know, Diane, you were a very loving caregiver all those years. I still remember Mike and you visiting Bismarck and what a zest for life you both had. I never did get to play that tennis match with Mike!! We'll get 'er done in heaven!! I have been down your road, Diane, and just want you to know I am praying for you and Mike, thinking of you and enveloping you in a huge hug! Sandy Wald-clooten

Dianne,
Please accept my sincere condolences for your loss.
Although I did not work closely with Mike, it was obvious to me that his work ethic and integrity were second to none. His heart was bigger than a room and his caring actions for others were evidence of it.

Dear Diane and Family,

I worked with Mike for many years in Calgary. It was always a toss up which of us were the first ones at work to put on the coffee pot. I was deeply impressed with how valuable he was to our company, and what a high moral compass he had in every thing he did.
We recall how excited he was to retire and move back home Washington to enjoy with his family. So sad he wasn't able to maintain his active life and realize his dreams.

Wishing the family our sincere condolences.

Diane, Mary and Michelle
So sorry for your loss. Mike was special. Any time Mike was in Portland I would get a call so we could get together and share old time memories from high school and catch up on family. We played together on Central Catholic's basketball team and I think Msr. Murphy will talk about some memorable moments on the court. Mike was a truly remarkable man with many talents and compassion for others. He will be missed but never forgotten.

Mike was among the highest quality of men and women that I have had the privilege to know on a personal basis. Mike and I looked forward to his intended retirement which was to be a few lots away on lake Pend O Reille. Sadly this was not to be. Following I saw in Mike a strength of character and resolve that was amazing yet so consistent with the high quality of man that he was to family, fiends and all whom were lucky to know him, work with him and enjoy his ready supply of intellect and good humor.
We have all been enriched by our good fortune to have known this fine man.

My condolences and prayers for Mike and your family. Central Catholic's Class of 58 definitely produced many successful and accomplished men. From what I read he was right at the top in both categories.

Dianne, Mary and Michelle,
What a loss this is.....we are so sorry about Mike's passing. He was an example of the right way to live and of how the combination of smarts, goodness, and hard work bring gifts of all kinds to your family, your friends, and those in your community. Thank you for sharing him with so many of us, both face to face and in stories over the years. (The two favorites are still the shopping trip in a mountain area convenience store, and the bridal room during Mary's wedding) We will all be better for knowing him.
Love and prayers of healing to you all.... Annemarie and Jas
