McMANN, Nancy Lynne.
Passed away June 13, 2021 after 85 years of grace and bounty. Nancy was the eldest of three children, born to Blythe Pike Fowler and Ira Loren (Shorty) Fowler on June 24, 1936. In 1955, Nancy married Gravin Walter McMann, a fellow Spokanite and distinguished research chemist. They pursued their careers, raised their family in Kenmore, Washington, and were passionate and loyal attendees for many seasons of Husky football games before retiring to Sacheen Lake, their favorite place to be. Love for lake life was a feature throughout their lives together. Nancy and Gravin first met at Diamond Lake and spent summers throughout their working years at both Diamond and Sacheen. Two generations of children, grandchildren, friends, and extended family enjoyed endless hours with Nancy and Gravin on the deck, on the dock, swimming, boating, and chatting, dreaming, and eating s'mores around the campfire late into many long and delicious summer nights.
Nancy McMann graduated from Lewis and Clark High School, Holy Names College (B.A.Ed.), and the University of Washington (M.Ed.). Nancy began her career as a professional educator in 1958 at High Point Elementary in Seattle School District. She continued her practice over 37 years, culminating with principalships at Horizon View, Sunset, and Lake Forest Park Elementary Schools in Shoreline (WA) School District. Emblematic of her passion and commitment as an educator, Mrs. McMann as a principal was renowned for learning and remembering the names of every child within the first weeks of each new school year. Nancy also served as adjunct faculty for the University of Washington School of Education, Community Representative in the King County Youth Justice Diversion Program, and volunteer classroom tutor at Madrona K-8 School (Edmonds, WA). Generations of families from Nancy's classrooms benefited and will continue to remember with fondness and gratitude her deep and loving commitment to learning and the children she served.
Nancy was preceded in death by Gravin and her sister, Mary Fowler. Nancy is survived by her sister, Judy Fowler of Spokane; her son, Mike, daughter-in-law Azlin, and daughter Lynne McMann; her grandchildren, Sam McMann, Natasha McMann Georgio, and grandson-in-law Aregawe Georgio; and her great-grandson, Aregawe Michael Wyatt Georgio. The family wishes to express thanks to all the staff at Brookdale Park Place, Newport Hospital, and Newport Long-Term Care for their care of Nancy. Cremation was arranged by the Neptune Society. Contributions in Nancy's name may be made to Reach Out and Read,
https://www.reachoutandread.org/, in appreciation for helping kids benefit from key research in brain development and making reading important for their families. A memorial celebration will be held in the summer at Sacheen.
