Perry Buster Obituary

BUSTER, Perry Perry Buster, longtime Spokane resident and musician, died Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at the age of 73 at his home in Murfreesboro, Arkansas. He was born on August 11, 1935 in Delight Arkansas, the son of the late John and Pearl Buster. Perry was a talented vocalist and guitar player and a consummate entertainer. At twelve years old, he saw an old Montgomery Ward guitar for sale in a barber shop window. A few days later, his dad brought it home for him and showed him how to play a few chords. And so began a more than 60-year career in music. A self-taught guitar player with a voice like velvet, Perry performed with an extensive list of musicians covering a wide range of music, beginning with the classics like Jimmie Rodgers, to old-school rock n' roll of the 50's and 60s, to rockabilly, bluegrass and country and western. All told, his memory held thousands and thousands of songs. He attended Eastern Washington University in the late 1950's where he performed with The Stompers with band mates Dan Miller, Merk Cannell and Jerry Robinson, who traveled and played for audiences throughout the Pacific Northwest and Canada. In 1960, they were banned from playing at EWU, due to the "rowdy behavior exhibited by the crowd which attended the Stompers dances," attesting to the popularity of the band and the start of a new era of live rock and roll music and dancing. After serving in the United States Army in the early 1960's, Perry and his family settled in Spokane, where he owned and performed at two bars, The Falls View downtown and The Happy Hour in the Valley, with band mates Jim Littleton, Jim Meloche, and Hap Joplin. Perry was named Spokane Male Entertainer of the Year three times. Throughout the 80s and 90s, Perry continued to play music at bars, restaurants and clubs throughout Spokane and Eastern Washington. Perry returned to Arkansas in 1997, and even in retirement he continued to delight audiences at local events, weekly radio shows and regular performances. He also volunteered his time to play at local senior centers and civic events. He enjoyed teaching and sharing his love of music, and at any time had between 20 - 30 students of all ages taking guitar lessons from him. His talent and love of music will live on through the many who enjoyed his performances and those who learned to play guitar themselves from him. Perry will also be remembered for his generosity, kindness, and humble, affable and fun-loving nature. He will be missed more than words can express. Perry was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include: daughter Keri Buster of New York, NY, son Darrin Buster of Spokane, WA, three sisters Floreece Acosta of Fairplay, SC, Janette and Al McBain of Ocala, FL, and Linda and Dick Wingrove of North Tonawonda, NY, wife Iline Tadlock of Murfreesboro, AR, aunt and uncle Evelyn and Jim Gresham of Nacogdoches, TX, long-time best friend Dan Miller of Yakima, WA, mother of his children Kay Buster of Spokane, WA, cousins Sue and Willie Click, Faye and Jay Wilson, and Shirley and the late Jess Ross, and many much loved nieces, nephews and friends. The family suggests donations be made in his name to "VH1 Save The Music Foundation". Mailing address: Deniece Dykes, VH1 Save The Music Foundation, 1515 Broadway, 20th Floor New York, NY 10036. A celebration of Perry's life will be held in Spokane in early August.

This is about my friendship Perry Buster. We became instant friends when we met in 1953.

We were both juniors at Pateros High School with the same interests in Sports, Guitars, and girls! It has lasted 56 years.

We soon started entertaining with our “Harmony & Sivertone guitars to whoever would listen. We especially enjoyed singing to the pretty girls!

We graduated in 1955 after playing together in ALL sports at PHS. We were the only 2 boys who played sports from our class. We graduated in the top ten of our class! (There were 5 girls and 5 boys in the class of 1955!)

After my Polio (July 1955) derailed our dreams of starting a band, Perry and I hooked up again at Eastern Washington College of ED in 1958.

We started up a band and played college dances and clubs around the Spokane area. We called ourselves “THE “STOMPERS!” (Perry, Guitar/Lead singer; Dan, Bass/Harmony; Merk Cannell, Lead Guitar/singer/harmony and Jerry Robison, Drums.) We all were students at EWCE. All were PE majors with crewcuts except Jerry. We played together several years, traveled the Northwest (USA & Canada) and won a “battle of the bands” (10 bands competed) in the Spokane area. We cut a record in 1960. (Our moms bought most of them.)

When we got married, and I was his best man, and Perry was my best man.

After college, I started my career as an educator, and Perry continued his career as a professional singer and guitarist.

We did get together several times over the years to play and sing together. I

Many times over the years, I tried to get a decent recording but most were poor quality. Usually, we had 1 microphone and a reel to reel recorder in a noisy club or tavern, or a cassette recorder on the deck.

I had a dream to go to a professional studio and cut some songs. Finally, in 2003, fifty years after we started playing guitars together, I traveled to Arkansas where Perry lived to fulfill this DREAM. We picked 41 songs and recorded them in a little over 4 hours, ALL first takes. Dan Miller See you on Aug. 10th at Curley's, Post Falls

I first knew Perry in high school, unfortunately he was an opponent and not a team mate. He was an excellent Basketball player and excelled in track. Later when he enrolled at E W U we renewed the friendship. He was always so much fun. None of us could wait for the weekend and the Stompers. He will be missed. Ray Gilman

Perry was a wonderful friend and entertainer. His death has left a hole that will never be filled by anyone. I knew him from when he around the Davenport area and played music there. He was well known and well liked.

I knew Perry from EWU and later the Happy Hour in Spokane Valley. Perry and Kay lived a few blocks from us and my wife, Dorene, had one of their children in her 2nd grade class. I bought a Ventures Model Mosrite guitar from Perry in 1965. He was a great performer and could sing any thing you asked him to do. We just started e-mailing through the classmates.com web site after we found each other again. I can't begin to express my deepest sympathy to Perry's family. I will certainly miss him but he's up there now with his vast country and western friends and having a ball. In the same week, I lost another musician friend, Bob Bogel of the Ventures. May they both rest in peace and serenity. They both were great entertainers.

Perry Buster was one of best singers and rhythm guitar players. He was a "Human JukeBox" who could sing any song you would mention. I had the pleasure of singing and playing music with Perry off and on since 1953 when we met in high school. We formed "The STOMPERS" band in 1958 at EWU. Perry was a caring, giving person who brightened many lives with his beautiful music. -Dan Miller

I grew up with Perry's daughter, Keri, and son, Darin. Keri is one of my best friends to this day. Perry was an awesome person and so much fun. He was very much involved in my childhood. He always took Keri and I out to the lake and we would have so much fun. I will always remember Perry Buster!!! My sincere condolences to everyone in the family. May the great memories of Perry live on in all of our hearts forever!

Perry was a very special person and will be dearly missed. I will always cherish the memories of dancing and listening to the Stompers as a teenager at the open air pavillions in Pateros and Brewster. My favorites were "Blue Moon of Kentucky" and "Mule Skinner Blues". A ready smile, a cool voice and a warm hand shake, that was Perry.
