Peter POHL Obituary

July 13, 1945 - June 17, 2023

Peter was born in Minneapolis, MN, and passed away from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident in Montana.

Peter met the love of his life, Terrie, his wife of 54 years in Libby, Montana while he was doing his first year of teaching. Two years later, they were married, Peter was drafted to the Vietnam War in 1969 and served in the Military Police. He completed his service with an honorable discharge in 1971.

After returning from the war he met his only son, Jonathan, for the first time. The family then moved to Cody, Wyoming where he got a teaching position and completed his Masters's Degree at the University of Wyoming. Peter went on to be an educator for the next 40 years. All in the meanwhile attending Washington State University for his Ph.D. in Education. He retired from Eastern Washington University where he worked with many student-athletes affording them the ability to be admitted and remain eligible at the University. This work was dear to his heart as Peter suffered from dyslexia as a young child and student. It was rewarding to him and at the same time honorable choosing a career as a reading specialist to help others with similar challenges.

The family moved back to Montana in 1990. Montana was the place where Peter first taught and fell in love with the history, culture, and beautiful landscape. It was very fitting that he would pass away in the place he loved the most.

Peter was an avid tennis player and coach. He also grew up playing hockey. One of his biggest highlights was eating a hotdog in the penalty box with the famous hockey coach, Herb Brooks.

Peter is survived by his wife Terrie of Liberty Lake, WA, son Jonathan, daughter-in-law Ana, grandchildren Makenzie and Quintin, sister Dr. Mary Pohl and brother Dr John Pohl. And of course the beloved family cat Colezander.

Still to this day, Peter had deep, long-term friendships that include many of his students and their families. A quiet man, but very purposeful. He was loved and respected by many.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

I still smile when I see Peter's photo. Bless his soul; he always made me laugh!

Oh man, I miss this guy. I am likely the last person he shared a pizza with at Mackenzie River in Kalispell, Montana prior to his departure for home. Just like we always did, with kidded with each other, smiled and laughed, told old war stories and lies and schemed for our futures as weathered and wise gentlemen. Neither Peter or I have lots of friends now but we picked up with each other whenever he visited the Flathead Valley like it was yesterday. Peter was one of my all-time favorite personalities and beloved friend.

Peter and I did not have too many very close friends. I am honored to have been one of his. Filled with complete sadness by this accident.

So sorry for your loss. We were in a long line of cars after the accident/wreck occurred that Friday. We saw a BMW go by on a wrecker and we later saw a Class C Winnebago on another wrecker. I prayed for them then. Just now seeing details about the wreck. Again, so sorry. Peter and I had a lot in common as my father was a Tennis Pro and I also earned a doctorate to work with college kids. God bless you all.

I met Peter at EWU when Brian Levin-Stankevich (my boss at the time) was provost, and Peter was involved with the student athletes and the hockey team. I always enjoyed Peter's wit: he was a quiet one but always very funny. This world is a poorer place without him. Sending sympathy to Peter's family and friends!
