Phillip SANDBERG Obituary

June 15, 1932 - October 9, 2025

Spokane - Phillip Lied Sandberg of Spokane, WA, passed away peacefully on October 9, 2025. Phil, son of Edna and Paul Sandberg, was born at Sacred Heart Hospital on June 15, 1932. Phil graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and earned his BA from the University of Washington School of Business in 1956, while being an active member of Sigma Nu fraternity.

Following graduation, Phil attended the Naval Aviation Candidate School at Pensacola, FL, where he was commissioned as a flight officer. He served in several naval air units and squadrons, including the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Shangri-La in East Asia. After active duty, he remained in the Naval Reserve, completing his 20-year commitment and retired as Lieutenant Commander.

He married the love of his life, Marilyn Melin, and they moved to Spokane to join his father at Standard Securities as an Investment Broker. He later became President of Sandberg Securities in 1962, and during that time, served as a member of the Northwest District Committee of the National Association of Securities Dealers and was President of the Spokane Stock Exchange. He was active in the Spokane Community banking industry, having been both a founder and member of the Board of Directors of the American Commercial Bank, Sterling Savings, and Inland Northwest Bank. He was chairperson of the Board of St. Luke's Hospital, Deaconess Hospital, and Empire Health, and was an active member of the Spokane Downtown Rotary Club, Hayden Lake County Club, and Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and a life member of the University of Washington Alumni Association.

His family was the center of his life and love! They shared summers at Hayden Lake, swimming, playing tennis and golf, and skiing in the winter. He and Marilyn loved vacationing in Hawaii and traveling the world with friends. Phil was kind, warm, and had an incredible sense of humor that brought laughter to those around him. He loved Spokane, his many dear friends, and had the gift of making others feel special. Phil is survived by his wife, Marilyn; daughter, Jean Kolb (Karl); sons, Steve Sandberg (Suzy) and Greg Sandberg (Sarah); grandchildren, Kelisha, Scott, Holly, Sara, and Anna; and nine great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 8th, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church (219 E. Rockwood Blvd.), at 11am, with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Rockwood Residence Foundation or a charity of your choice.

Dad Sandberg was a special part of my growing up years and then had a special place in my husbands heart too. So funny, interested in everyone and full of joy. What a treasure
