Died peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving wife of 42 years and Shadle High School sweetheart, Carole Jean Decker (Smith), children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and sons- in-law on Monday
09-12-2016 at 9:58 PM.
Ray A. Smith, a long time Nine Mile Falls, WA resident was born to Verble A. Smith and Gloria V. Smith of Spokane, WA on 08-21-1956 who preceded him in death. He was one of four children born to Verble and Gloria Smith. Still living are his brothers, Mark A. Smith, William L. Smith. He was preceded in death by his sister Gwen R. Smith. Ray was the proud father of Naomi LaRay Smith (Kahn), and Brandy Jean Smith (Delaney). He was father-in-law to George L. Kahn, Cory J. Delaney, and Michael D. Hinkle. Ray has seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, foster grandchildren. His grandchildren are Mikayla R. Hinkle her fiancé Alex Gurske, Dustin M. Hinkle, Stephen "Tyler" Hinkle, Desiree O. Delaney, Haylee D. Delaney, Brooke A. Delaney, and George "Colton" Kahn. His great- grandchildren are Clara Grace Dove and Ryan A. Gurske.
Following his graduation from Shadle High School, he married his High School Sweetheart, Carole Jean Decker (Smith) on 06-01-1974 and enlisted in the Navy where he served 20 years as a Navy Seabee, Builder, 1st Class. During his time in the Navy he was deployed to Spain, Japan, Philippines, and Guadalcanal. Ray also had several stateside orders in places such as Washington, California, and Nevada.
Ray enjoyed his youth riding motorcycles, hunting, fishing, camping, and enjoying the days where families spent their time outdoors. He instilled these values and culture in his own children through continued family camp outs and hunting trips with them and their children. He was an active member of the Eastern Washington ATV Association. Family time bonding in nature was very important to Ray and he would want everyone to make more time for just that!
Ray was well known for his active role in supporting his children's interest and hobbies throughout their childhood. He often chaperoned Girl Scout trips, volunteered at their Dog 4-H group in Fallon, NV and even built their groups complete agility equipment.
Ray's celebration of life service will be held on Monday, September 26, 2016 at Fairmount Memorial Park, Sunset Chapel, at 5200 W. Wellesley, Spokane, WA 99205. Service will begin at 12:3PM, interment at 2:30PM, followed by a reception which will be announced after the service.
