Robert DICKSON Obituary

Robert C. Dickson, MD passed away on February 2, 2024, in Spokane, Washington, at the age of 91.

Robert (Bob) was born in 1932 in Buffalo, New York, to John C. and Katherine C. Dickson. He had an older sister, Lois. In 1958 he graduated from the University of Buffalo Medical School. After a residency in Seattle, Washington, he served in the United States Army in Fort Hood, Texas, achieving the rank of Captain. Shortly after the Army he moved to Spokane, Washington where he practiced as an Anesthesiologist until his retirement.

Bob met Jane Staebell in college and they were married in June of 1958, just before their journey which eventually led them to Spokane. They lived together for 47 years in the home they built near Comstock Park, and celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in May of 2023.

Bob is survived by his wife, Jane, his three sons John (wife Kim), Bill and Jim (wife Luda), and his two grandchildren, Andrew and Julie. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister.

As a young man, Bob enjoyed playing baseball, and gained a love of the outdoors as a camp instructor in Canada. In college, he was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity and the swim team. His hobby in drawing cartoons led to his work being published in the Medical School year book.

With a young family, Bob and Jane enjoyed playing tennis and taking the kids swimming. As the family grew, regular trips followed to British Columbia Canada for great outdoor adventures. This was accompanied with annual summer backpack trips across the Pacific Northwest with a group of dear family friends.

Bob and Jane were avid skiers and introduced their children to the sport at a young age with frequent journeys to 49° North and Mt. Spokane. Bob was a familiar figure on the trails of "The Bluff" below High Drive and was one of the pioneer trail builders there.

Throughout life, Bob and Jane were blessed with many wonderful friends. They cherished their time with them. During their retirement years, Bob and Jane enjoyed spending time with friends and family at the Spokane Symphony, local performing arts, Manito Golf and Country Club, Priest Lake and Schweitzer Mountain Resort.

Bob will be remembered as a devoted husband, a caring father, a loving grandfather and a dedicated physician. He was quick to smile and always had a sparkle in his eye. His genuine interest in others, kindness and sense of humor made it a pleasure to spend time with him.

Memorial service and celebration of life will be held at Heritage Funeral located at 508 N. Government Way, in Spokane on Saturday, February 24th, at 12:00 pm.

Bob and Jane were good friends and we enjoyed some skiing and golf together. My husband, Pete, was radiologist and so he and Bob were at St. Lukes together way back when it was a community hospital. We noted what a loving husband he was to Jane especially when she finally needed his care. a friend, Lea Horn

Dr Dickson worked at Sacred Heart where I worked as a PACU nurse for 31 years. He was so kind and always took great care of his patients and all of us nurses. We all loved and respected him so much!

Dr Robert Dixon was one my instructors/mentors during my anesthesia training at Sacred Heart Medical Center. He was patient and kind and good spirited, as well as an excellent instructor, with many excellent subtle but extremely helpful bits of information on the practice of anesthesia. One of the things we all liked about Dr. Dixon was how "whistled" his way through the day..He was an inspiration and set an example on how to live life and give excellent anesthesia services. I will miss knowing he´s not out there anymore!!!
