Russell HATLEY Obituary

HATLEY,
Russell David "Bud"
(Age 79)

Died November 28, 2016 at Providence Sacred Heart Spokane after a short illness. There will be a memorial service in the spring in Wenatchee WA. Bud was born January 22, 1937 in Hudson Township, Caldwell County, North Carolina to Russell Wiley Hatley and Carrie Belle (Correll) Hatley. He was the youngest of four children and the only son. His sisters called him "Buddy" and the nickname stuck for his entire life. Bud spent his childhood in Wenatchee, WA and was active in all types of sports but settled on alpine skiing in his teens. It became a lifetime passion. He graduated from Wenatchee High School in 1954 and is a member of the Wenatchee Valley College Hall of Fame for his time on the 1957 Ski Team. Following high school, Bud enlisted in the army, serving for two years. After his time in the army, Bud attended Western Colorado State where he skied competitively. He had the opportunity to compete for a spot on the US Olympic Ski Team, losing his spot on the final gate of a slalom competition; a race in which he was in the lead following the first run. Throughout the 1960s and the 1980s, Bud was a career sporting goods salesman, representing Daiwa, Blizzard, and Kastle ski companies as well as numerous ski outerwear suppliers. In August 1966, Bud and former wife Jane (Peterson) Goldberg welcomed his only son John Wiley "Jack" Hatley. Bud was a loving father his entire life and from 1982 to 1986 coached Jack and his team members at Mission Ridge. Bud and his son remained close for the rest of his life. Bud was preceded in death by his parents, sister Marcella and two brothers-in-law Dick Stimpson and Jack Garland.
He is survived by his sisters Merle Garland and Coyette Stimpson, his son Jack and wife Francine (Darcy) Hatley, grandsons John Hatley Jr., James Hatley and David Hatley. An online tribute page can be found at:
