What an inspiring teacher. As a freshman in 1958, I had no idea what dietitian was. Ms. Newcomb included me when she took the Juniors to Seattle to check out the internships there. She was always encouraging to all students and kept track of us throughout our careers. She is missed.

The most devoted professor that I have ever come across. An inspiration to me, my very first professor. What a dedication that she had for her profession. She will be missed but her torch will be carried on by her students like me.
Dr. Shirley Newcomb,
May God keep you under his wings, Thank you from the bottom of my heart for making me who I am today. I still hear her growling stomach during near lunch time classes but she will go on with her classes, no matter what, growling hungry stomach or else. What an incredible Educator of our time.
Thank you, Professor Newcomb. We will miss you.

A breath of fresh air in the Home Ec. department in 1949--and only 6 years older than I!! I will never forget her help and support to get me out of the Home Management house in time for graduation after I spent 10 days in the Infirmary with the hard measles. It was wonderful to spend some time with her many years later and renew a good friedship. Rest in peace, Shirley. You were an inspiration to many of us.

Shirley was a Newcomb cousin from Cambridge,NE. We admired her accomplishments, her allegiance to Cambridge Public Schools, old friends from there, and we were privileged to serve her 1940 Class reunion dinner for she and her Class members here at our Cambridge Bed & Breakfast. Her Mother, Lelah, was a lovely and talented lady and her cinnamon rolls were world class delicious!
Shirley inspired many students and made a huge contribution to the well being of our world by teaching the importance of sound nutrition in our lives.
Thank You Shirley!! You were a champion and will be greatly missed.. May you rest in peace.....
Cousin, Gloria (Joseph) Hilton & Gerald Hilton

Ms. Newcomb was one of the best instructors in the Home Ec dept at U of I in the late 70's. I still remember her nutrition classes and to this day I know that is why I am always interested in learning more about how to be healthy.

You were a wonderful professor. I remember when you mentioned in class that you always had a glass of orange juice every morning with your breakfast. That must be why you lived such a fruitful life!
