Sidney H. "Syd" HANDLIN

1937 - 2015

HANDLIN, Sidney H. "Syd" (Age 78) Passed away on August 14, 2015 in Bedford, Ohio. He was born on June 26, 1937 in Portland, Oregon to Harry and Pauline Handlin and grew up in Seattle, Washington. Syd was very proud of his Jewish heritage. Syd went to JJ McGilvra Grade School, Mini Junior High School and Garfield High School. He was inspired by his junior high school chemistry teacher, Virginia Kent, to go into physics. Physics was a passion of his life. Syd graduated from the University of Washington with a Bachelors in Physics in 1960. On December 24, 1967, he married the love of his life, Paula Rockoff. The Rabbi said that there was nothing else to do on Christmas Eve. They were married for 42 years until she passed away in December 2009. They had one son Brad, who they loved very much. He worked as a physicist in the defense industry and later went into business. Syd was also an inventor. He is survived by his son Brad Handlin; brother and sister-in-law Bob and Estelle Handlin, brother-in-law and his wife Hugh Rockoff and Hope Corman; niece Stacy Handlin; nephew and his wife Jack and Alison Handlin and their children Stella, Abby and Eli. He will be looking down upon his future grandkids. Graveside Service 10AM, Friday, August 21, 2015 at Mt. Nebo Cemetery. Syd never had cancer but would want donations in his memory sent to the City of Hope, 1500 East Duarte Road, Duarte, CA 91010.
