Thank you to all those who've expressed the special wonder of this man. Even though I mostly learned from Steve as a student, when it appeared he accepted a Chair position at University of Hawai`i at Hilo, Steve was there for me in to support me as a new faculty member. I am sharing a few of his letters I believe are representative of the way he inspired hundreds of students in geriatrics, mentored dozens of residents, and enlightened thousands of colleagues during his career during local, regional and national pharmacy conferences.

“Dear Katherine: Thank you for sharing. Teaching evaluations are always revealing and at times hard and difficult to read. However, often they present a great opportunity for growth and improvement. At this stage of UHH-CoP existence I believe we need to strive for teaching and clinical excellence while research will be less of a priority. Striving for teaching and clinical excellence are paramount. I see that you had multiple practice sites listed as an interest and I'd encourage you to focus on Hawaii Island Family Medicine---and provide the best service to that site-to the patients, to the students, to the providers. Having a thriving focused practice site will assist with excelling in the classroom and visa versa. Let me know if I can assist in any way. Once again, thank you for sharing --- a great opportunity to gain focus and strive for excellence. Thank you for your sincere commitment to address your reviews.

…A year later good news came that my students had won a national award for community service. Steve came across the news article and sent me this email entitled: Excellence!

Congrats to your students and the wonderful opportunity you provided them to shine! Leadership - mentorship at its best! All for the betterment of health in Pacific!
A simple and heartfelt - Congrats!
Best regards,
Steve
…My response:
Sincere thanks for the genuine encouragement, Steve.
There has been so much grace and second chances I never deserved. By Providence I know that I am here, not for myself, but to the set the students up for success. I am thankful that this endeavor has brought forth good fruit.
Take care of yourself, my friend. I am glad we have safely landed in the mutually encouraging camaraderie that is meant to be. My turn next to cheer you on!
Katherine
So…now we all cry again. Let's remember that while Steve's race on earth is accomplished, it lives on in us, and we honor him when we give each day 110%. Tomorrow I teach his favorite topics…Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. It's for you, Steve. Not like I could ever do it as well as you, but I'm going to try.

I heard the sad news of Steve's passing and wanted to share my sympathy. I had the honor of working with Dr. Setter on one of my pharmacy rotations in Spokane. While working with him at Elder Services, he encouraged me to write a paper, which he helped edit and get published. I will keep the entire family in my prayers....what a gem he was!

Steve, you are loved by so many people; so many students, colleagues, family members and friends. Thank you for being a friend to me and taking so much time to help when my mother had cancer. Even though there were days I am sure you were tired, you stayed by her side and brought a sense of calmness to my family. God bless you and your family.

Steve was an amazing man. He started lecturing for our Physician Assistant students when we opened the Spokane site, 16 years ago. Many of our Pharmacology speakers over the years were brought to us by Steve. He is honored at graduations every year as a Golden Apple in perpetuity speaker. He will truly be missed.

I did not personally have the privilege of knowing Steve, but I worked with him in a professional capacity as he used his expertise to review pharmacology for the projects that I manage. It is a shame for the world to have lost such a brilliant and generous man. Kind thoughts go out to his family during this difficult time; he will be missed.

I'm so very sorry to learn of Steve's passing. We here at Elsevier greatly valued his contributions to textbooks for nursing students. We had hoped that he would one day soon assume the mantle of co-authorship of one of our books. My heartfelt condolences to the entire family.

I first met Steve when we were freshman at De La Salle High School in Detroit. We were inseparable friends through high school and were roommates at Michigan State during our undergraduate days. So much of who I am today was influenced as a result of the time Steve and I spent together, sharing our hopes and dreams, as we grew from boys to young men together. Although our paths in life took us in different directions, Steve was the one friend who was always there for me, ready to lend a helping hand, at the drop of a hat. Although I never met Steve's daughters I know he was extremely proud of them as he often spoke of them as they were growing up. I am going to miss you Steve, I will always hold dear the wonderful memories I have of the time we spent together. May God Bless you and your family.

I am a WSU PharmD graduate, Class of 2002. It was my sincere honor to have had Steve as one of my professors. I learned so much form him. I also did a 6-week externship at Elder Services. Steve's gentleness with the patients we visited in-home was astounding. Even THEY thought of Steve as a part of their family.
He was honest with the students, his clients, the staff with whom he worked. He was thoughtful and gentle and passionate in doing his second love, when being a veterinarian didn't quite work out.
Although about 8 years has past since I've actually seen him, I've had time to reflect on what a true inspiration Steve was to me, and to so many who knew him.
To Steve's family, I pray that God will grant you His tender mercies to help you find peace in Steve's loss. Although his time on earth was short, The Lord surely recieved a good man into His kingdom.
May God be with you in this time of sorrow. Peace be with you always.

Dear Family, Colleagues and Friends,
As the President of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists I extend our sympathy to those gathered in celebration of the life of Stephen Setter, DVM, PharmD, CDE, CGP, FASCP. I was privileged to have collaborated with Dr. Setter throughout his distinguished career. My first question upon meeting Stephen was how did a veterinarian end up as a geriatrics pharmacist? Fortunately, serendipity intervened and our profession of pharmacy was the benefactor. Dr. Setter was an accomplished researcher who was highly respected in the field of geriatric pharmacy. Stephen's expertise in diabetes and in caring for complex older patients was an invaluable asset to our members. Stephen was the consummate teacher. He was adept at taking complex clinical concepts and making them relevant to his audience. Countless pharmacy students and healthcare professionals provide better patient care as a result of Dr. Setter's teachings. Perhaps Dr. Setter's greatest impact was in caring for his patients.
Kahil Gibran once said, ““when you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.” It was my delight to consider Stephen a colleague. Our society has lost a leader, scholar, researcher, mentor and friend. If there is any consolation I can offer Dr. Setter's family and friends, it is in knowing that his legacy lives on through his protégés, students, and fellow colleagues. When our society gathers for its annual meeting in Seattle this November, I will ask for a moment of silence and reflection for the life of Dr. Stephen Setter.
With respect and sympathy,
Sean M. Jeffery

My Friend,
It started at a Christmas party and continued through 4 years of the ups and downs of Veterinary school and beyond. I'll never forget all our good times together, our hikes, your sense of humor--who else would be so excited about a phone in Bone, Idaho? I loved you and respected you and though I never said it, I think you knew anyway. I still wish I had told you so, and how proud I was of you. Adios, mi Amigo. Vaya con Dios.

I first met Steve when he knocked on my office door and asked if he could be admitted to our pharmacy program. He told me he was a vet but had become allergic to cats and dogs. We began our friendship and he become one of the top students I have had the pleasure to teach. Later we hired him and progressed to be one of the best faculty members we every had at WSU. He was brilliant, fantastic with patients, funny and was a great lecturer, researcher, mentor and truly cared about his friends and students. He called me often for advice but I usually was the one who learned and felt better after we talked. He was devastated about not being able to return to the College of Pharmacy. We talked often and I wrote many letters of recommendation for him. He was special, unique and simply magnificent in all that he did. I am so sorry he is gone. He is irreplaceable and has left such a void. So so sad...........

Steve, When you first arrived at Elder Services, we showed you how to protect yourself from our enamored female clients who called you at home. You used your infectious laughter and magnetism to honor the best in others. You required your Pharm.D. interns to observe at least one of Elder Services' therapy groups so they would begin to understand the real person behind the prescriptions. Some interns got more than a full dose of orientation. Every home visit will long be remembered not just for your professional wisdom but for your great heart and compassion. You truly carried the vision of Elder Services in serving the most isolated, frail, forgotten, neglected members of our society. I used to say, how did we ever get along without a pharmacist? Truly, how are we ever going to get along without you? You are greatly missed.

To all those who knew Steve it is truely a huge loss. Steve was an amazing person with so many talents. He will be missed so much. I had the privilige to know Steve through Elder Svc's when I worked there and Steve asked me to do some work for him to help when he had much to do. I thought how does he do it with everything he had on his plate but he did along with his many outdoor activities! He had so many amazing experiences in his life!
I will you Steve.
