Sybil KESTEN Obituary

KESTEN, Sybil Joy (Pullan)

Sybil Joy Pullan Kesten passed away in Portland OR, June 3, 2012 of natural causes. She was 94. She is survived by her brother, four children, three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Sybil Pullan was born on July 25, 1917 in Toronto, Canada. In 1936, Sybil graduated with her BA from the University of Toronto.

In 1951, her husband Norman's job took the family to Osburn, Idaho, the community where Sybil would raise her family. She helped organize Camp Fire Girls, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts groups. She organized clothing drives and rummage sales. Sybil was an active member of the local PTA and community theater groups. In the early 1960s, Sybil taught junior high school in nearby Wallace and Kellogg.

In 1974, Sybil and Norman moved to New York City and settled in Manhattan. In 2003, Sybil moved to Portland to be near her children.

Sybil was loved as a generous and open soul. She enjoyed art and created a number of wonderful water and oil paintings. She invited strangers into her home and treated everyone with kindness. She greeted each day with an optimistic spirit.

I have good memories of Sybil taking Reena and me to experimental theatre events around Manhattan. She was an adventuresome spirit and generous with her time and love.

Also, 2022 marks the passing of my dad, the last of the Harry & Rose Pullan children.

Sybil, Eleanor, Marjorie, Ruth & David - you are missed!

It was wonderful to reminisce about Sybil at our family Zoom meeting. We were delighted to see that everyone was still keeping and cherishing the art works that she had given us.

Everyone who knew Sybil loved her. We will all miss her kindness, generosity and warm spirit! I am grateful that she gave us some of her wonderful ceramic creations, which always remind me of her. I always felt connected to Sybil. My mother used to absented-mindedly call me by her name when I was young, since Sybil and I shared a great love of the arts.
