Thomas JONES Obituary

JONES, Thomas Arthur Thomas Arthur Jones of Spokane was born on April 14, 1943, in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Tom passed at the age of 70, on February 4, 2014. Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Vicki Kaye Jones and his sister, Ruth. Tom is survived by his son, Greg and wife Michele; and his three grandchildren: Jennifer, and twins Justin and Tyler; daughter, SeDonni; son, Thomas, and son Casey; cat Qweeter; sister, Tana; sister, Laurel; brother, Kirby; brother, Gib; aunt, Cleo; and numerous nieces and nephews. Tom lived many places when he was growing up but mostly associated his youth to his high school years spent in Ritzville. Tom was a great swimmer on the Ritzville swim team. A move resulted in him spending his senior year at Lewis and Clark high school, but always reflected and joined his Ritzville class for his reunions. After graduation he was invited to go to the U.S. Nationals in Los Angeles. Due to all his hard work and his many achievements in swimming, which included holding many records with his specialty in the mile, Tom was awarded a scholarship to attend WSU, where he went briefly in 1962. In October of 1963, He decided to join the Navy. Tom went into the fleet as an Interior Communication Electrician. He spent most his time on the Ammo ship USS Vesuvius in support of the Viet Nam War. He was honorably discharged in July of 1967 as a disabled veteran. Upon his return to Spokane Tom reconnected and married his beautiful wife, Vicki who happened to be his next door neighbor. Vicki had two children, Greg and SeDonni, prior to Tom and Vicki's marriage in October of 1968. Tom and Vicki had two children together, Thomas and Casey. Thomas was born in May of 1969 and Casey arrived in August of 1970. Tom got a temporary job in the gas department at Washington Water Power in August of 1967 and then became a permanent employee in September. Tom worked for 14 years in the water department until the company sold to a utility from Pennsylvania. Fortunately, the company built a power plant in Kettle Falls. Tom interviewed for a job as an auxiliary operator and started training for the position in July of 1982. Tom moved his family to the area shortly after that. The plant went commercial in October of 1983 and in 1987 Tom became a control operator. Tom worked at the Kettle Falls Generating Station of 21 years until retirement on January 1, 2003. In September of 2003, Tom and his wife moved back to Spokane to be closer to his children and relatives. Tom took up golf at the age of 55 and really loved the game and the time he spent with his golfing buddies. Tom is loved by many family members and friends and will be greatly missed. Donations can be made honoring Tom to the charity of your choice. He gave to charities for many years and helped many people throughout his life and had no distinguished favorite. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at 1:00PM at Heritage Funeral Home, 508 N. Government Way, Spokane, WA 99224. Shipmate... I wish for you fair winds and following seas, deep green water under your bow, your main rifles trained in the posture of peace, and a gentle breeze at your stern.

I swam with TJ on the Ritzville Swim Club. I then went on to swim in college and then coach High School swimming for 32 years. During that time I never saw or coached a swimmer who had the competitive drive and determination TJ showed. He entered every race knowing he would win. Most times he did, sometimes he didn't. The few times he lost, he just came back and practiced harder.

Tom moved to Spokane before our class of 1961 graduated. We invited him back for our 50th reunion which he did attend. It was great to visit with him and do all the I remember when stuff we shared during our club swimming careers.

I will miss him and his fighting spirit. He truly was a Champion.

My condolences to his family.

Dear Tom, I was thinking about you two months ago, and the happy times you gave me and others on the Ritzville Swimming Team. All of us who knew you will miss you very much. I'll always remember the time you pushed me off the high tower at the Kelowna Regatta. We weren't divers (for sure), but you certainly were a great swimmer and competitor and did much to help make the swim club a power to be reckoned with.

We only knew Tom for a short while, getting to know him and his sister at the Lady Zag games. He loved his Zags and his family. We miss our Zag friend.

Tom was a good friend, and my favorite bother-in-law. "Mr. Jones" came to visit me regularly at my cube at the main Spokane office after he had retired;I was still working. If he hadn't been so entertaining, I would have smacked him. I would have to listen to his stories of how GRAND it was to be retired. What a guy. Laurel and I will miss Tom so very much.

Laurel may have said it best about how Tom loved to "tease" with folks. He could dish it out and he could take it also. He and his great friend Martin were the center of great laughter as we and others brought the WWP Kettle Plant to life. Tom I will miss you old friend.

I was saddened to hear of Tom's passing. Tom was my cousin and when we were kids we raised hell riding around on bikes in the sagebrush south of Kennewick, shooting our BB guns at whatever moved. Later, when he was in high school, I watched him practicing for swimming in Ritzville, amazing to see him churning back and forth for hours with ease and determination. We drifted apart in our own lives, and we last saw each other at my mom's 90th birthday party in Kennewick. I will miss you Tom, rest in peace.

I was sorry to hear of TJ's passing. We were team mates on the Ritzville Swim Team. He was one of the hardest working and most competitive swimmers I have known.
My condolences to his family.

I'm Laurel Tarbert/White, and I want to thank you for taking the time to read the guest book for Tom Jones.
Some of you knew him as Tom; some of you knew him as TJ; my husband, Walt, liked to call him Mr. Jones.
Tom Jones was my big brother.
Tom teased me unmercifully until I was around 13 yrs. old. When I finally stood up to him, and told him to "knock it off", we became fast friends.
Tom taught me how to play pinochle.
Tom taught me how to play cribbage.
Tom taught me how to play chess.
When he was swimming at the Ritzville City Pool, he would see me watching him through the chain link fence and wave....this during a competitive race (which is usually won).
We played canasta for hours on end when he came back from basic training - we would be up until 2:00 AM playing the game; talking; remembering; wishing, hoping, dreaming.
Tom taught me how to drive. Anyone who has been a passenger when either one of us were driving, knows exactly what that means. Driving in the car is the only time I use the "salty language" my brother learned in the Navy (he probably learned that "salty language" sooner, but this time, I will blame the Navy).
Tom loved poetry.
One of his favorite authors and poets was Jack London. We both learned the words to the poem "The Cremation of Sam McGee" and would recite it time after time, getting louder and louder with each verse; and finally laugh our heads off at our "competitive spirits".
Tom loved the National Geographic Magazine. We would talk about the articles, and soon two or three hours had passed, and we were so surprised time had flown by so quickly.
Tom was sometimes misunderstood.
Tom was respected by his family.
Tom was an honest man.
Tom was many things........
To me, above all else, Tom Jones was my big brother............
