Thomas SPECHT Obituary

Tom Specht, 72, died of lung cancer on January 25th. Tom had many career pursuits. He was an altar boy, tire tech, high-rise construction worker, Fuller Brush salesman, OU Industrial Engineering Graduate, ROTC airborne 1st Lt., bank consultant, University of Washington Engineering and Business Masters graduate, Boeing Lead Engineer, Hewlett-Packard (HP) process engineer, facilities engineer, architectural designer, design consultant, facilities manager, and construction manager.

Tom was born into a Catholic family of nine in Lawton, Oklahoma. His dad owned Homer's Tire Service where everyone in the family worked. Tom started at eleven. He thrived in the outdoors throughout his youth, hunting with his dad and brothers and was the senior patrol leader in Boy Scouts. Tom learned to appreciate the environment and aspired one day to live near abundant forestland and water like Liberty Lake. An avid reader, Tom would have opted for a book or hike over Atari if video games had been around while he was growing up.

Tom designed his Liberty Lake home 37 years ago. He is recognized as one of the pioneers of the Liberty Lake trail system. His work with the community committee, city, county, and state paved the way for a trail network now considered one of the best in the state. He would be very pleased if you use the trails that he helped develop. He also helped coordinate free concerts on the shores of the lake.

Tom loved yoga, basketball, football, soccer, mountain biking, road biking, running Bloomsday corporate cup, triathlons, swimming, hiking, climbing mountains, cross country and downhill skiing, ice skating and tennis. He coached basketball and soccer. He climbed 5 summits in the Cascades, and Mt. Rainier twice. He loved good healthy food, sudoku, crossword puzzles, adventure, travel, camping, and reading.

Tom loved his wife Kathy, daughter Jessica, brothers and sisters, nieces, nephews and their kids, friends, neighbors, and Gayle Dexter, caregiver and soul mate. A celebration of life will be held in the spring.

Tom was an amazing person--super-social and extremely kind and welcoming. I met him at HP, but spent lots of other time with him, including playing coed soccer badly. My city bike is still one that he sold me a number of years ago. I thought he'd live to a very old age, and I'm saddened to find that cancer has taken him from his community and family.
