I can't remember a time in my childhood when I had more excitement then when Uncle Bill and Auntie Maxine were coming back to Spokane. Also the fond memories of being at the lake, the constant tinkering, and the love he always showed his nieces and nephews. I had the opportunity to spend some quality grownup time with Uncle Bill when I came up to Spokane for the last family reunion. I told him how much he meant to me and how he was in my fondest memories. I think he was a little embarassed, but is was a special moment. I'll miss you Uncle Bill.

Growing up in Spokane, I remember my first memories of Uncle Bill. I say Uncle Bill, because as a 4th grader that was his proper name. Not Bill, or Cope,or Copley it was always Uncle Bill and Auntie Maxine. I know I'd heard of them in younger times, but that was when they came back from Illinois (I think it was) to Spokane for good. How cool was that, to have an Uncle with a Volksawagen Micro Bus.
Lesley and Linda were the "older" cousins that we so admired. And my buddy, Cousin Donny. It was a complete package. In a 4th graders mind, all inseparable.
What a parodox, Uncle Bill, who could take other folks junk, and make it into something valuable. I don't know how many sheets of plywood Don and I helped him salvage from abandoned latrines at the Boy Scout Jambaree site. But it was more than a couple of loads. And years later he said he had used a lot of it but still had some left. And then that same Uncle Bill could enjoy a trip to the Casino, where the only stories I ever heard were the ones where he came out ahead.
And cards, there were always cards around. At the house, at the lake. And if the weather kept us inside He and Antie Maxine got us kids playing Crazy Eights or Spoons. At night there was always a foursome of adults at the table playing cards.
I could ramble on with lots of memories of a wonderful man. My Uncle Bill.

When I was young (1965?)I got to ride with Uncle Bill in his Volkswagon pick-up out to the cabin at Pend Oreille Lake. We would play for hours, slide down the slouse box with my cousin Cindy getting full of splinters. Uncle Bill had a smoke house for smoking fish and he would let me help inside.
He was always the first to help out from helping pack up when we moved to AZ. in 1968, cooking burgers with Donnie at Long Lake in 2002 for the family reunion and in his calm way asking me if I need any help or what can I do.
Of all the men in my family, Uncle Bill will always be one that In some small way I will strive to be like because in a very big way he unknowingly affected mine.
I'll Love You Always, Drew Weathers

Bill was instrumental in starting my second career, I also retired from the military and He hired me at the Spokane Health District in 1974. He was very kind to everyone. I'm sorry I won't be here to be able to attend His memorial service, But I will be thinking of Him. Condolences to Everyone.
