Michael Cory Obituary
News Death Notice
CORY, Michael E. 61, of Springfield passed away Saturday, November 27, 2010 in his residence. He was born in Piqua, Ohio on November 4, 1949, the son of Horace N. and Florence O. Cory. Mike was an avid sports fan, but his greatest enjoyment was his family and being a part of his grandkids lives. He was known as a lovable guy, who would help anybody. Mike was employed as a Specs Engineer with Navistar with 42 years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Janet L. Brown. His survivors include his best friend and wife of 40 years, Pat Cory, whom he married March 26, 1970; one son and daughter in law Christopher M. (Cathy) Cory of Donnelsville; one daughter Amy (Doug Massie) Cory of Springfield; four grandchildren Tyler, Caitlin, Nathan, and Jaxyn ; brother in law Robert Brown, Sr.; and several nieces, nephews, and many good friends. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5-8 Pm in the RICHARDS, RAFF & DUNBAR MEMORIAL HOME. A celebration of Mike's life will be Thursday at 1:00 PM in the memorial home with Rev. Orbie Estep of Grace Missionary Baptist Church officiating. Burial to follow in Vale Cemetery. Memorial contributions are requested to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105, a passion which was close to Mike's heart. Pat and Family, I am so sorry for your loss. You and Mike always made us feel welcome in Springfield, you were wonderful fans for band gigs and, most importantly, you were an important part of the "band family."
I read and printed the wonderful notice about Mike in the Springfield news, and I had to share with you that St. Jude Hospital and I go back to 1966 when I graduated from high school and volunteered to work on the (then) annual fund drive in Columbus. An attorney named Joe Karam was the head of the drive here, and he was a good friend of Danny Thomas (both are Lebanese as you might imagine). That fall when I was at Wittenberg, Joe invited me to join him and hundreds of others at the hospital's annual convention in Memphis. I went and had a wonderful time (my being half-Greek and half-Italian didn't hurt any). Of course, we visited the hospital. I will never forget it.
To make a very long story short, Joe eventually became the Wendy's franchisee in Las Vegas, made a lot of money and did a whole lot of good. His son David became the president of Wendy's.

So sorry to hear of your loss. "Coach Cory" was one of my all-time favorites. From the Benjamin Steel days to the Wittenberg basketball years, I always enjoyed the time spent with "Coach Cory". He will truly be missed.

I had the pleasure of waiting on Mr. Cory at the IH credit union years ago and in recent years would run into him at Wittenberg basketball games. Words seem inadequate to express the sadness we feel about Mike's passing. We are here to support you in your grieving process. You all have been family to us since shortly after I was born, there is not a time in my life I don't remember having you all around. The Corys and all family ~ I can't even begin to express the loss I feel. Twenty-five years ago I met an amazing coworker who became my best friend, Patty.
