Ahmed Usman Obituary

Ahmed Usman, MD
Ahmed Usman, MD, 83, of Dayton, OH, died Friday, August 11, 2017 at his home. Prior to relocating to Ohio, Dr. Usman was a long-time resident and practicing physician in Stamford, CT. Dr. Usman was born in1933 in Hyderabad, India, where he received a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree from the local Osmania Medical College. He first came to the United States in 1958. For a year, Dr. Usman continued his study of medicine in Mount Holly, NJ, before joining a cardiology residency at the Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital (currently Hahnemann University Hospital) in Philadephia, PA. During this time, he also met and married his wife Marion. The couple subsequently spent three years in Great Britain, where Dr. Usman continued studies in medicine and pulmonary medicine, as well as completed an additional year of residency training. He then returned to the U.S. and was licensed to establish his medicine and cardiology practice in Stamford, CT. Over his 30 years in this practice, he became well known in Stamford's healthcare community for his professional accomplishment and personal concern for patients and their families alike. Many residents of the area remember him making house calls and going the extra mile to ensure absolute and unconditional care. In 1991, Dr. Usman retired from this practice and moved out of state to serve as a physician at the Chillicothe Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Chillicothe, OH. He was employed here for eight years, before retiring in 1999. Dr. Usman's career as a medical doctor was an inspiration to many who knew him. However, family and friends best remember him for his deep love and care for the people around him. Dr. Usman's home in suburban Stamford, CT, was a gathering place for close and extended family, friends from near and far, professional colleagues, and almost everyone who crossed his path. He was a source of guidance, someone others freely turned to for a sense of belonging. In his retirement, Dr. Usman enjoyed golf, rediscovered his love of classic Indian poetry, and passionately shared stories of his heritage. He remained an avid follower of his favorite television game shows: The Price is Right and Wheel of Fortune. Dr. Usman is survived by his wife, Marion Usman of Dayton, OH; son Dr. Mike Usman and daughter-in-law Dr. Anne Van Cott of Glenshaw, PA; son Saleem Usman of Jupiter, FL; four grandchildren Nicholas Usman and Samantha Usman of Glenshaw, PA, and Alexander Usman and Kassandra Usman of Jupiter, FL; and four siblings, including Akhter Usman of Stamford, CT. According to Dr. Usman's faith and family traditions, funeral services were held the day of his passing, with arrangements being made by the Islamic Cemetery of Dayton and Marker & Heller Funeral Home, Dayton, OH. To honor Dr. Usman's memory, the family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society (donate3.cancer.org) or to the Alumnae Association of the Stamford Hospital School of Nursing (c/o Carole Manimbo, Secretary, 719 Ponus Ridge, New Canaan, CT 06840). To Dr. Usman's Family,
My deepest condolences on your loss. Dr. Usman helped keep my father (Lt. Edward McNulty) around for a few more years. My family was forever grateful to have those added years. On behalf of my family, I wish you all peace in during this difficult time.

Marion--sorry to hear of your loss. You may not remember me--but in 1978 or so my first job as a new/old LPN was at Smith House. There, you took me under your wing, made me feel welcomed and I started a long nursing career. Often think fondly of you as I pass by your old house on Northwind often on the way to our daughter on Larkspur. Sincerely, Elsie L. Ferrara

My deepest condolences to Dr. Usman's lovely wife, Marion, and all of the bereaved. I was a medical student at The Ohio State University when I met Dr. Usman. We had a student-run free clinic just north of campus, and Dr. Usman would regularly volunteer his time to help take care of patients who had no insurance, as well as to teach the medical students. One day he invited all of the free clinic student steering committee to his home for a wonderful meal prepared by Marion. We all had such a wonderful time, and that's where we met Marion, who was such a gracious hostess. I never forgot the kindness Dr. Usman showed all the patients at the free clinic, and the kindness he showed to us medical students. He will be greatly missed.
