Catherine Mathews Obituary

CATHERINE MATHEWS 105, passed away peacefully at Stamford Hospital on Monday, June 23, 2008. Born June 19, 1903 in Kilfeara, County Clare, Ireland, she was the daughter of the late Owen and Nora Kelly Scanlan. Catherine immigrated to the USA in 1922 and was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Mary RC Church for over 85 years, making her the oldest living parishioner of the church and she was the last to have a wedding in the original wooden church, Thanksgiving Day, 1927. She was also a member of the Rosary Society. She is survived by a daughter, Joan C. Kaminski and her husband, Joseph, of Stamford; two sons, Edward T. Mathews of Stamford; and Kevin O. Mathews and his wife, Barbara, of Jacksonville, FL; seven grandchildren, Jean Fratino of Norwalk; Kenneth Kaminski of Coppell, TX; Barbara Loughran of Trumbull; Sean Mathews of Norwalk; Tara Catalano of Greenwich; Pam Smith of Jacksonville, FL; and Rhonda Smith of TN; twelve great-grandchildren; and four great great-grandchildren. Many nieces and nephews in the US and Ireland, also survive. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Edward R. Mathews in 1983; a grandchild, Timothy E. Mathews; two brothers and five sisters. Friends may call at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, on Thursday, June 26 from 5:00 - 8:00 PM. A funeral procession will be leaving the funeral home at 9:20 AM on Friday, June 27 and proceed to St. Mary RC Church, 566 Elm Street, Stamford, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow at St. John's RC Cemetery in Darien. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations are made to a charity of one's choice or St. Mary RC Church, 566 Elm Street, Stamford, CT 06902. www.cognetta.com
