Pamela Shiang-Pin Tang
Pamela Shiang-Pin Tang passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 9, 2023, in Stamford, CT, with her loving husband and family by her side. Pam had a remarkable childhood, being born in Anhui, China in 1938, and moving to Taiwan in 1949 with her parents and four brothers during the Chinese civil war. After graduating from National Taiwan University in 1960, Pam came to New York City in 1961 to earn her PhD in Biochemistry from Columbia University. In New York, she met her husband James Tang, and they married in 1965. Together they raised two children, Rich and Jenny, in Princeton, NJ and then Palatine, IL. After living in the Chicago area for 30 years, they moved to Stamford to be closer to their family.
Pam was not only a devoted wife and loving mother, she was also a highly respected research scientist in the field of biochemistry. She conducted her postdoctoral studies at Yale University, Princeton University and Northwestern University. Turning to the corporate world, she was a valued research team member at Nutrasweet, and later the Director of Research at Griffith Laboratories until her retirement in 2001. She was proud of her many contributions to the field of food science and her innovative patents.
Above all, Pam was most proud of her family, and cherished spending time with her children and grandchildren. She also valued education highly and was always eager to tutor her children and grandchildren on any science topic. She excelled at everything she did, including her hobbies – she was an accomplished Chinese watercolor painter, a superb cook, and a talented knitter. She enjoyed reading novels (especially Agatha Christie mysteries), watching classic Hollywood movies and TV shows (particularly "I Love Lucy"), singing Chinese opera, and traveling with her husband, Jim. Her kind heart and good humor will be fondly remembered by all who knew her. Pam truly lived a blessed, happy and significant life, fulfilling her own American dream.
Pamela will be greatly missed by her beloved husband Jim; son Rich Tang and daughter-in-law Eileen Tang of Greenwich, CT; daughter Jenny San Jose and her husband Don of Darien, CT; grandchildren Michael, Nicole, Will and Lydia; and many friends and colleagues. A service will be held on Friday, December 15, 2023, at 11:30 a.m. at Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien, CT 06820. Friends may greet the family on Friday morning from 10:00-11:00 a.m.
