As a teenager, I started training in Judo under Rick and Vinnie Ursone during the 1970´s. This was at Greenwich High School and was part of the Samurai Judo Club. This was a very formative time in my life. The training was tough but so fulfilling. Also, a great camaraderie was formed with Rick, Vinnie and the rest of the students. I also wanted to mention that Rick had a great sense of humor and would have us all laughing at times (usually at the end of class). My training continued into the 1980´s, while I was in college. Eventually, I was awarded my black belt under Rick and Vinnie´s instruction. Rick´s workouts where incredibly tough, but this paid huge dividends in competition. This Judo training/competition paid dividends through the rest of my life as well. Not just in martial arts but in everyday life. Because of Rick´s training, I was able to handle stressful physical and mental situations much better than if I had never been tested in Judo. Even after I stopped training in Judo, I kept in touch with Rick. In my late forties, I started training in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. Over the years I would call Rick to discuss the differences and similarities between Judo and BJJ. I would also tell him that I would utilize Judo techniques that he taught me in the BJJ class. This past April (at the age of 61) I received my black belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. The next day I called Rick to tell him. I had a nice long talk. I told him that I never would have trained in BJJ, if it were not for the foundation in martial arts that he gave me. Unfortunately, I didn´t realize that would be the last time we´d talk. He was a great guy and I will miss him.
