Richard McClung Obituary

RICHARD G. MCCLUNG age 95, a resident of Greenwich from 1953 until he moved to Concord, Massachusetts in 1997, died of heart failure on Saturday, August 2, 2008 at his residence. He was the husband of the late Jean Barrett Coffin McClung. Mr. McClung was a retired senior partner of the New York City law firm, Messrs. Carter, Ledyard & Milburn and was head of his firm's corporate work for some years. Mr. McClung was born in Butler, PA. After the Butler public schools and the Kiski School in Saltsburg, PA, he attended Princeton University, graduating in 1935 with honors and as a member of the Phi Beta Kappa. He graduated from Yale Law School in 1939 and began his law practice with Davis Polk and Wardell in New York. During World War II he served in the Navy's Procurement Division under James Forrestal. He became Commander, U.S.N.R. and in 1946 Secretary Forrestal presented to him the Legion of Merit. In the 1950's, Mr. McClung was head of the Youth Consultation Service of New York and head of the publications committee of the Metropolitan Opera Guild. He became a board member and subsequently a president of the Greenwich Hospital, Greenwich Country Day School, Greenwich Land Trust and Historic District Commission of Greenwich. As a member of the board of the Family Center, he drew up its original pension plan. He was also a board member of Greenwich Audubon Society and Hill House. He did volunteer work for the Greenwich Hospital, St. Luke's Community Services of Stamford, the Family Center and others. After his move to Concord, Mr. McClung became an alternate on the Concord Historic District Commission and a member of the vestry at Trinity Episcopal Church. He did volunteer work for Concord Academy, Emerson Hospital, Trinity Episcopal Church and others. He is survived by three daughters, Jean McClung Halloran of Menlo Park, CA, Mary Goehring McClung of San Francisco and Priscilla Barrett McClung Jelliffe of Stamford, CT., a sister Mary Anne Ladd of Northfield, MA., a son-in-law John H. Jelliffe Jr., grandsons Jeremy Leeming Jelliffe, John Michael Jelliffe and Samuel Barrett McClung Jelliffe and granddaughter Emma Jean McClung Jelliffe. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 9, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Barnabas Episcopal Church, 954 Lake Avenue, Greenwich. Gifts in his name may be made to Princeton University, P.O. Mr. McClung,
Sir, I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for our Country when you served in the USN during WW II and for being a member of the Greatest Generation. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.
